Song Review:: PRIMROSE: Steal Heart- Steal Heart

  • Release date: 2024 November 14
  • Album tracklist: CASE#4, Steal Heart, Mission Escape, Trick or Trigg, Feel It
  • Album runtime: 12 minutes

I've heard some really good things about the group and their earlier albums so I'm a little bit excited to see what the fuss is about.

Also, everyone was an adult at debut. Yay!

The album run time absolutely has me squinting at because why, but I'm also curious because the song titles sound like they may be a cohesive whole. If that is the case, I can forgive the run time a little.

Instrumentally and vocally, this song reminds me so much of Britney Spears's ...Baby One More Time, which was honestly not something I was expecting to hear. This song hearkens straight back to the 90s in a way that feels more authentic than most of the recent Y2K knock-offs. The song has a strong, thumping beat and weird, high-pitched warbling (along with some science fiction warbling which is a completely different sound) that as a 90s baby is immediately familiar. It also reminds me a little of one of the tracks from the video game Danganronpa, but that's a recent development for me and even though that association stresses me out, the way it smacks of girl pop from the 90s is enough to hold the other at bay.

My lip curled a little at the first line, because it reminded me of the cursed AI Wonwoo cover, but what followed took me back in time, like if TLC were covering a Britney Spears song. The group gets to use vibrato with their well-supported voices, something I appreciate a lot and think bodes well for the rest of their discography, which I'm very curious about now. Language-wise, the Korean to English ratio is the exact opposite of what I normally expect, with the majority in English and some lines or specific words in Korean. Very interesting. The lyrics are almost nonsense in places, which would be a problem if grammatically they didn't seem to follow the Korean rules more than the English ones, which helps even though it hurts my brain to try to follow. Even so, it's still just enjoyable to listen to.

I did not think those were balloons at first; I thought they were eggs and was a little alarmed. But this music video doesn't go the science fiction route. Instead, we have a robbery in progress and the traditional prison stripes of the first costume do a good job of instantly placing the genre away from science fiction monster eggs and to an Ocean Eleven-style heist where the aim isn't a necklace, but rather the subject's heart. Each of the members has their own role in the heist. The concept is strong, the storyline a little less strong, but has enough of the heist tropes that it still manages to be cohesive, and the production quality despite that is still high enough that unless you're actively looking at the storyline, you're most likely going to gloss over what production does a good job of trying to hide. This is a very well-done music video. I'm very impressed.

And as a side note, holy jazz song, Batman!! Straight up, I don't care that it's not even a minute and a half long, nor do I particularly care that there aren't any vocals to it. Mission Escape is perfect. There have been some jazz-esque songs recently, but I haven't heard a true jazz song since BTOB's Blue Moon. Please give me more jazz.
