Song Review:: Onew (SHINee): TOUGH LOVE- TOUGH LOVE

Image
Release date: 2026 March 09 Album track list: Dot dot dot (...); TOUGH LOVE ; Flex on me; Lie; X, Oh Why? Album runtime: 15 mi nutes  My man Onew! Look! I'm actually doing this when it comes out instead of months later like with what happened last time! Everyone, I love his voice. I really do. It's so gorgeous, and while I've found a few other artists who have a similar vocal tone and quality to him, they're pretty far between. I am however deeply disappointed in the runtime for the title track and the album runtime overall does not hit the three minute average. It rounds up to it. This is a very grindy instrumental while simultaneously being soft and floaty. It's an interesting combination. I'm not sure how well this works though, so this might take me a minute to decide on exactly how I feel about it. It could just be that the song doesn't have the space to be able to finish what those two parts of the song could have been together.  Crucially, even during...

Song Review:: Onew (SHINee): PERCENT- Silky

Image
Release date: 2025 July 15 Album tracklist: Silky , Caffeine, Marshmallow,  ANIMALS , Confidence,  Oreo Cake, Far Away, MAN, PERCENT (%), Epilogue, Happy Birthday Album runtime: 30 minutes  Since it's currently December with a smaller number of releases, I'm hitting some of the ones I previously didn't do. Mostly the ones in the summer months when I wasn't doing these as much, and July 15th is squarely summer. Now, I also know that I should be doing some of those title tracks, but this is my SHINee bias and I still feel guilty (Taemin reference not intended, but I'm leaving it here). So, here we are. The song has quite a lot of sparkly groove to it, if that makes sense. It's got bits where it's really smooth, but it's too bouncy to say that the whole thing is smooth. This one is also really short, so it's hard for it to get much traction going, but this is definitely a happy feels songs that lightens the mood and is just so good to hang out with, you...

Song Review:: Onew (SHINee): PERCENT- ANIMALS

Image
Release date: 2025 July 15 Album tracklist: Silky , Caffeine, Marshmallow, ANIMALS , Confidence, Oreo Cake, Far Away, MAN, PERCENT (%), Epilogue, Happy Birthday Album runtime: 30 minutes  My man, Onew. I'm so sad that I couldn't make it to his tour while he was here last spring. But that also would have meant I'd be going to LA every single weekend in May, and I don't even live in the state. But it is good to see him happy and healthy and just generally relaxed. He'll be back, and hopefully it won't be in a month when everyone else is going to be having concerts I want to go to. I'll get to the pre-release eventually.  First thing, his rap section is done a capella. That wasn't what I was expecting, because normally there's an increase of energy with rap sections, so that's a generally interesting point to the song. The song has a really good energy rhythm to it, generally matching, though sometimes it contrasts, which creates an inherent jolt o...

January 2025 Wrap Up: Auld Lang Syne

Image
Whooee, it's been a long 164 days, hasn't it? What do you mean it's only the end of January?  Nope. I'm staying focused. Eyes on the prize. In this case, the prize is the end of December when Minhyun is discharged. So, one month down. Eleven to go. We're also one month closer to several other discharges that will help distract me from the wait, and one month closer to some post-military comebacks that I am absolutely most excited for. And there's one coming out next month that I believe was the first one I was aware of to enlist. But this is January! A little bit of a slow start to the year, but I'm appreciating the pace as I get back into things and recover from my cold.  We had only two group debuts that I could find, that of KickFlip out of JYPE and Stray Kids' younger brothers, considering I think they're in the same division. I'm also hoping this is a good sign and the number of debuting groups will drop this year. Fingers crossed. And als...

Song Review:: Onew (SHINee): Connection- Winner

Image
Release date: 2025 January 06 Album tracklist:  Winner , Promise You, Boy, Graduation, Conversation,  Yay Album runtime: 17 minutes  Lovely to see you putting out music again, Onew! Especially so close to the last one. Right now, I fully trust that he isn't overworking himself, partially because I trust him to know his limits as a seventeen-year idol, and partially because I trust his new company. The CEO's comments about selling the funeral wreaths they've been sent gives me life, and I'm also genuinely delighted that Onew is getting to do music he wants to do and exploring so much. Yay  was a little bit of a weird fever dream that I am still fully here for, and I'm curious to see where he went with Winner . Even if I am side-eyeing the album runtime a little. An OST vibe to the song is where he went with this one. I know he only worked on the lyrics, and so full kudos to the composers. Oh, my word. It's incredibly cinematic without most of the orchestral tra...

Song Review:: Onew (SHINee): Connection- Mansae {Pre-Release}

Image
Release date: 2025 January 06 Album tracklist: Winner , Promise You, Boy, Graduation, Conversation,  Yay Album runtime: 17 minutes  Happy Birthday, Onew!! I found out I actually have one of his photocards for my month birthday wall I have in my closet office at work so he gets to hang out between Eric and Joshua.  Yes, I know the actual English title is Yay , but the associations I have with that word make me smile and I want to smile when I see this. As per usual with pre-releases, everything will be updated once the album is out, although I'm definitely going to be leaving the title of this song as Mansae in the title for the post. Okay, maybe it's because I heard it twice on my way to work this morning, both the SHINee World IV and the regular studio version, but the instrumentals at the beginning of this remind me of Ready Or Not . Very funky, very groovy. They really just automatically make me want to dance and remind me of some sort of comedy buddy cop movie...

Song Review:: Onew (SHINee): Flow- Beat Drum

Image
Release date: 2024 September 03 Album tracklist: Beat Drum , Hola!, MAESTRO, Shape of My Heart, All Day, Focus Album runtime: 16 minutes September is apparently the month for SHINee releases. Taemin released the MV for Horizon , Key announced his next mini album to come out at the end of the month. Minho has another comeback planned, although I don't remember when exactly. And our illustrious, lovely leader has now released his first mini album under his new company, as well as his first mini album since his hiatus last year. Not gonna lie, I cried when he came back, which is silly because I didn't even really listen to SHINee yet. I know the title of the song is Beat Drum,  but I wish there was a stronger drum presence to the song as a whole. The backing instrumentals are oddly subdued for a song literally titled what it is. I have to assume it's by design to let Onew's voice shine more, otherwise it's a strange choice. I'm always a fan, though, of actual snapp...
