Music Show Wins:: Week of 8/20 - 8/26

  Ooh, this week had some interesting wins. Well, okay. First of all, this is the first time in a while that we've had a full batch of wins. The only way this could have been better is if After School Club had come off of hiatus. Alas. But that's fun regardless. But you know what's more fun? Three of the six were first wins for songs. And one of the six wins got a triple crown! That brings the song to ten wins, which is apparently 1/7 of the group's total wins, and makes that triple crowns from Inkigayo, Music Core, and MCountdown.  I picked a group that for the ASC re-run this week that is currently on a survival called A-IDOL, and I don't know how I feel about it because of the nature of this survival show. My girls Purple Kiss, Lightsum, and DreamNote are also on it, which is...concerning for a completely different reason. So give them all some love, yeah? (Other groups on the show are WOOAH and iCHILLIN, so give them some love too). Anyway, this is episode 571 f...

  This is the first week in a hot minute where I've actually already had the songs reviewed in full! It helps that we had two repeats, but I'm also excited about the two first wins for songs on here! And we got a Triple Crown for JUMP even though it has not been promoted! Whoo! The Triple Crown also means that next week, we're guaranteed a new win on Inkigayo, which is helpful for the other groups.  With After School Club still on hiatus, here's the re-run for the week. It's actually pretty fitting because I'm starting to migrate into wanting to actually learn about the members in the group rather than simply loving every single song I hear from them. That's right, it's episode 458, featuring a 2021 Dreamcatcher! This was convenient because it made it easier for me to connect some of those personalities to their names. We'll see if it sticks. In the meantime, the group is wildly loud and chaotic, and I mean this in the best way. Same kind of idol as...

  Consequences to being behind on reviews, the only win this week that I've done a review for is BLACKPINK's, but I have them started in my drafts. Also, just as an observation, only one of the wins between this week and last week is longer than three minutes. A couple are shorter than two and a half. But, we've got a bunch of new wins for songs, even though two of the music shows were on leave this week. So that's fun and exciting! And this is EVNNE's fourth win ever, so Whoo! I apologize for the lack of stages, but did TWICE ever perform this on MCountdown? For the After School Club re-run, we're going to go to episode 203 from 2016, with WJSN's debut song! I'm actually watching a kdrama with Bona in it right now, which is why I'm sharing one of their ASC appearances. Hosts were Eric Nam, Jamie, and Kevin Woo from U-KISS, singing voice of Mystery Saja.   So, this week was actually the week of the Triple Crown. This is what I get for not doing these on time anymore. Misinformation. My apologies. I'm leaving the other post as is, even though I did fix the little spreadsheet I've got going on down there (where you can find the links to those songs when I get them posted). This week was dominated by two groups, both of whom are getting to the point where they could be considered older groups. One turns ten next year and the other turns seven. When the Show Champion one gets uploaded (assuming there is one), I'll be back to update this. As for After School Club , which is still on hiatus, I'm delighted to hand off one of my absolute favorite groups (BTOB) with one of their most fun songs ( BEEP BEEP ). This was actually shortly before they turned two and is actually an album of theirs I have, which is impressive because their albums are kind of hard to find. This is episode 47 from all the way back in 2014 with Eric Nam a...

  Big 3 Company domination this week! And! Even cooler! We got the first Triple Crown in a while! We don't have as many videos as I'd like, because one of the songs I don't think has been promoted on music shows, and one of them I had to go back to a week prior for the performance, but still. Only Inkigayo did not have a show this week. For After School Club, I think this is the most recent re-run I've shared. It's episode 629 from 2024 and the group ARTMS for their first full album! Aron was the only one MCing that week as Allen and Taeyoung were absent. The angel dance from the dance challenge was cool to watch. It's really pretty. (Also, Aron had to wear angel wings and I couldn't be happier about this, I remember absolutely cackling when I watched it live because of how adorable it was).   Hello, everyone and welcome to this week's one-stop shop for the music show wins! We are down two music shows, which is unfortunate because that means fewer wins, but we do have a first win for a song!! Whoo!! For the After School Club re-run due to their ongoing hiatus, I'm handing you ep 453, featuring the boy group WEi! First episode of 2021, first time WEi was on, and while its their debut song, they were about a month out from their second mini album. Hosts were Jamie, Heejun, and Jaeyun (AKA Jayn Lee). Song Review:: BLACKPINK: JUMP

Image
Release date: 2025 July 11 Album tracklist: JUMP Album runtime: 3 minutes  I've been doing this for almost two years and this is the first BLACKPINK group song in at least two years, but the first non-OST in three. This brings the total up to just over thirty in total, which sounds like a lot until you factor in how long since debut. And that's a failure on the company's end. But it's still exciting for the fans now that the drought is a little bit over. It won't be over until there's a mini album or a proper album, but this is more of a quick cloudburst, enough to wet the ground but not enough to help the plants survive long. And I'm also pretty disappointed that it's less than three minutes long considering the above paragraph, but I'd still be disappointed even if the group was more active. This is probably dance pop at its finest with a sprinkling of latin and EDM to really round out the sound. Y'all will have to tell me if it feels like a BL...

  Three of the Big 4 are represented this week in the music show wins, but they're not the only ones, which is also cool. I like diversity in an ecosystem because that indicates healthiness for the ecosystem. We've got a couple of first song wins, which is delightful for all of us, and mostly them because those wins are important. And I was waiting for one of those songs to get a win. Also, I couldn't be happier about Close Your Eyes for getting a second (very well deserved in my opinion, that album is amazing and incredible) just about two weeks after debut. Whoo! I did a random scroll to grab an After School Club for this week as they're still on hiatus (which is fine and I'm happy to wait for them; I'm doing a lot of waiting), and after I finished watching it, I found my next one because it was the next recommended for me to watch. It's a group who is regularly a top listen of mine every month and they were on ASC exactly one time. This week, however, fea...

  Triple Crown came in this week, which is so exciting. Don't get me wrong. But you know what's more exciting? Two rookie groups got their first ever wins! Y'all, I cannot even pretend not to be ecstatic over this. This is so exciting! Congrats to KiiiKiii and Close Your Eyes! Whoo!!!!  For the ASC performance this week since they're still on hiatus, I just scrolled randomly through the playlist and the one I stopped on was the one I offer to you all, and I'm very pleased to say that here is Purple Kiss's attendance for Sweet Juice  back in 2023. MC's were Aron from NU'EST as well as Allen and Taeyoung of Cravity. And I have to say, I absolutely love Taeyoung's hair this episode. He looks so good. And it's also really cute that the members did the fanchant while the one fan was doing the dance cover. But you know what's really funny? The voice changing segment. You guys will enjoy it.   Another Triple Crown can go on the books! I want to confirm who won on The Show  before I add that on here. We've got a first win for a song here, as well as some familiar faces. As I said last week, After School Club would be going on hiatus at the end of its twelve-year first season, which means I have a lot of groups and a lot of performances to be able to look back on and share with you all. So I decided to go back to episode 410 and Weki Meki. The MCs were Jimin (Jamie Park of 15&), Heejun (of American Idol and K-Pop Star fame), and Yuri (of JxR and of almost NCT).It happened to be Yuri's first time as MC on ASC, and we also got a proto-MC Challenge with one of the members of Weki Meki teaching Yuri the point dance for Dazzle Dazzle. I also shared with you their sped up dance they did for that episode of ASC. I've got a special fondness for dances at 2x speed.   Well, all sorts of groups got wins this week, along with a Triple Crown! Congrats to all the groups for their first win for the songs! There isn't a single song that won on more than one show this week, which I like for the sake of diversity, and that means lots of different stages to share with you all. Also, three of the wins were with YG affiliated soloists/groups. After School Club had TNX (the group formerly known as The New Six) on, which was cool for them to talk about their new song before it comes out. Also, the amount of times they said something like "We didn't ask the company for permission, but it's fine" was hysterical, and one of the five of them is an absolute character. He's a delight. Also, the MCs on ASC announced this was the final episode of season 1 of ASC, which has lasted for twelve years, so they'll be going on hiatus for a little bit before the next season. So rather than just not include an ASC performance at all, because I can...

Song Review:: Jennie (BLACKPINK): RUBY- Like Jennie

Image
Release date: 2025 March 07 Album track list: Intro : JANE with FKJ, like JENNIE, start a war, Handlebars (feat. Dua Lipa), with the IE (way up), ExtraL (feat. Doechii) ,  Mantra ,  Love Hangover (feat. Dominic Fike ) ,  ZEN , Damn Right, F.T.S, Filter, Seoul City, Starlight, twin Album runtime: 42 mi nutes  Well, I'm pleased that this album is finally coming out. She's been releasing singles for months, and now we get the culmination of those releases. Congrats to her in this endeavor! I hope the fans enjoy it and that it continues to be a source of joy for them. Okay. Full disclosure. I'm not a huge fan of this song, which is fine. It's a genre/stylistic thing. I don't have to like all the songs ever released. But I'm not going into this with an abundance of enthusiastic giddiness. Now, that being said, I also don't think it's a bad song. So there's that. The instrumentals are minimalistic, punchily driven with the beat building the energy through ...

  Is anyone else as excited for ONF as I am? Because I'm really, really  excited for ONF. These are wins three and four for their entire career. Also excitingly, The Show  has resumed! First show of the year was this week! Whoo! This week actually had three first wins for songs, which is super cool. And curiously, though understandably considering their upcoming tour, 8TURN was on ASC before their song actually came out, so they couldn't perform it. They also revealed that they've been scolded quite a bit by the company for spoiling too much, but it kind of seemed like they didn't particularly care. There were some audio issues that caused some timing issues, but they were figured out fairly quickly. Or at least a workaround was figured out quickly. I'm very excited to see them on tour.  As always, links in the chart go to my reviews if you missed them. And the links for After School club go to the episode. Good times, friends. Song Review:: Jisoo (BLACKPINK): AMORTAGE- earthquake

Image
Release date: 2025 February 14 Album track list:  earthquake , Your Love, TEARS, Hugs & Kisses Album runtime: 12 mi nutes  There's a bit of a ramble that I  think is interesting, but you fully have my permission to stop reading this next paragraph at any point and just get down to the reviewing part. Not that you needed my permission. I can't control how much you read or don't read. I can just try to make things interesting foe me and hopefully someone else finds them interesting as well. I was hoping to be able to push this one off for a little bit longer, but Earthquake  has gotten wins, so here we are. It's literally nothing against Jisoo, but with my backlog, in an effort to catch up, I'm dumping songs into my drafts so that I remember to review them when I'm less slammed, but trying to focus on groups, with bigger profile releases getting the front of the line. As of this post and not  including it, I have 23 songs sitting in my drafts waiting to be rev...

Song Review:: Jennie (BLACKPINK): Ruby- Love Hangover {Pre-Release}

Image
Release date: 2025 March 07 Album track list: Intro : JANE with FKJ, like JENNIE, start a war, Handlebars (feat. Dua Lipa), with the IE (way up), ExtraL (feat. Doechii), Mantra , Love Hangover (feat. Dominic Fike ), ZEN , Damn Right, F.T.S, Filter, Seoul City, Starlight, twin Album runtime: 40 mi nutes  I wasn't going to just because of how swamped I am, but Jennie got a win on a music show, and so I must review this to follow my pattern. So this is the second pre-release from this album, which comes out in about a week from time of posting this. My apologies that I didn't do this one already. Timing was bad.  It takes a full thirty seconds for the instrumentals to do something more than a drum set with a heavy emphasis on the cymbals. At least the song is three minutes long, so those thirty seconds only take up about a sixth of the total time. But generally, the instrumentals feel a little bit too much like they're stuck in the same band of sound or type of instruments bei...

  ...There will be a link to the review for Jennie and Dominic's song review when I post it tomorrow. I wasn't paying attention to the music shows this week. My apologies. As always, the links in the chart below go directly to my reviews. Moving on, I was so excited for Show Champion to resume their episodes, and this week, I was mightily disappointed. I think this is the last Triple Crown that IVE can get for Rebel Heart , at least with the shows that are currently airing, and that's genuinely impressive. On ASC, we had the rookie group (and kids considering five of the seven are seventeen or younger) ARrc, who reminded me a little bit of labrador puppies. I don't know if I've said this before, but I'm actually really grateful for After School Club and Simply K-Pop for giving an extra space specifically for the rookies and the groups with smaller fandoms a space to show off when they have comebacks. They need these opportunities.  Show Champion: N/A MCountdown...

Song Review:: Jennie (BLACKPINK): RUBY- ZEN {Pre-Release}

Release date: 2025 March 07 Album track list: Intro : JANE with FKJ, like JENNIE, start a war, Handlebars (feat. Dua Lipa), with the IE (way up), ExtraL (feat. Doechii),  Mantra ,  Love Hangover (feat. Dominic Fike ),  ZEN , Damn Right, F.T.S, Filter, Seoul City, Starlight, twin Album runtime: 40 mi nutes  I really need to get my algorithm back to working like it was so I can get the new releases dropped in my lap so that when I'm not technically a fan (read as: part of the fandom; I really like a lot of groups but there are only a handful of which I'd call myself a proper fan rather than a browser), I'm still aware of the releases. I'm excited for Jennie. I believe she was the one who did Mantra , which I wasn't particularly enthused with when I wrote up the review, but one song is not enough to make me swear off an entire discography unless it is blazingly offensive (which Mantra was not). And I'm glad I'm not that way because this song has some serious p...

  We didn't get any of the music shows for the first part of the week because of the mourning period. Starting with Music Bank , we got a return to a song that had a couple of weeks without a win, and as soon as I saw the name, I started laughing. And then for Inkigayo , we got another older song. YG supremacy. For After School Club (ASC), the hip-hop girl group YOUNG POSSE were the guests. I found them to be delightfully adorable. There wasn't an MC challenge, which made me a little sad because that's my favorite segment, but I was very entertained by the members regardless. The link for the episode is included as always. I'm not including any performances this round because of who got the wins and the lack of a performance from YOUNG POSSE, but I will include a live performance from them Show Champion: N/A MCountdown: N/A Music Bank:  Rosé x Bruno Mars "APT." Song Review:: Rosé (BLACKPINK): rosie- toxic till the end

Image
Release date: 2024 December 06 Album tracklist:  number one girl ,  3am, two years, toxic till the end , drinks or coffee,    APT. , gameboy, stay a little loner, not the same, call it the end, too bad for us, dance all night Album runtime: 36 minutes Well, it's finally released. After her stellar run with APT.  (which needed very little promotion to explode so thoroughly two of the eleven-year-olds I coach sometimes were singing it the other day, and the one was doing the hand motions to boot. It was a surprise that shook me for a good couple of hours.), I know anticipation and expectations must be very high for the album among fans and casual listeners alike.  I'm a big fan of how the song starts with science fiction warbling. I'm generally a fan of that being featured anyway, but starting it off this way gives the entire song an interesting vibe, as well as when the science fiction warbling comes back into play later. There are strong synthy bursts of gu...

Song Review:: Rosé (BLACKPINK): rosie- number one girl

Image
Release date: 2024 December 06 Album tracklist:  number one girl ,  3am, two years, toxic till the end , drinks or coffee,    APT. , gameboy, stay a little loner, not the same, call it the end, too bad for us, dance all night Album runtime: 36 minutes  Hah! I figured out how to get the accent on the e. I'll retroactively go back and fix everything when I have a moment. I would have done what I did earlier, but I honestly didn't think it would work. More fool me. Also, I'll update this with the album's tracklist on release. Here comes the second of her singles leading up to her release in December. After the dominance of APT.  from last month, expecting the same explosive, worldwide obsession is unrealistic for this one as well (though lightning does sometimes strike twice), but I hope it does well at least. The solo piano throughout the first part of the song works well as a melancholy background, thematically appropriate given the topic of the lyrics. Ther...
