Music Show Wins:: Week of 05/14 - 05/20

Image
  Another week, another batch of music show wins! This week we got a full set of wins and only one repeat, so that's lots of stages I get to share with you all! Excitement! And four of these wins are first wins for the song, so that's even cooler! Whoo!  For the ASC re-run, I didn't mean to pick another debut. I picked one at random, went "Oh, Seungmin is a host. Oh! This was for NATURE's debut!" Fun times had by all. Three of the members had been in South Korea less than a year, which was cool to learn, and their 2x speed choreography was adorable. A little bit of chaos, a little bit of leggy coltish energy (yes, I know the difference between colt and filly but it's easier and less awkward to say coltish rather than fillyish, which spell check is telling me is not a word), but overall, precious. Also, them singing their debut song in a couple of different languages was cool. Show Champion: P1Harmony "DUH!" MCountdown: MEOVV "Hands Up" ...

Song Review:: DAY6: Maybe Tomorrow- Maybe Tomorrow

Image
Release date: 2025 May 07 Album tracklist: Maybe Tomorrow , game over Album runtime: 6 minutes  DAY6 has had a lovely resurgence that I'm delighted to have been able to witness. Fun fact, they actually got their first win the same year that NU'EST as a full group did. So I'm just going to say that 2019 was an excellent year. I call it the good year for a reason. Then they didn't get another win until last year, but they got five in a row, and two of those on a song that was, what, five months old? And I don't think it was the title track either, which makes it slightly funnier. I know that at one point Welcome To The Show was eligible for wins again around the same time, but didn't get any. Still, five within about a month across two songs is nothing to sneeze at, and the My Days should be proud of their fandom and their band. I hope I got the name of the fandom correct. This is a relatively mild song. Comforting. Fairly gentle. It's not a soft rock ballad,...

Song Review:: DAY6: Fourever- Welcome to the Show

Image
Release date: 2024 March 18 Album tracklist:  Welcome to the Show , HAPPY , The Power of Love, Get The Hell Out, Sad Ending, Let Me Love You, didn't know Album runtime: 24 minutes  I figured that since I have a moment and I did a b-side from the album (congrats again on the win for HAPPY! ), I should probably do the actual title track for the album. I actually love the whole album. It ended up on repeat swapped off with JR's he put out in January, and that ended up in my top listens of the year. Fourever missed out on joining it by not a lot. Also, this was their first album post-military if I remember correctly, which is why the album title is what it is. The drumset gets a lot of attention during the song, but most of the time behind it, you can hear the keyboard doing rather delicate chords. That creates a brighter sound than the drumming would normally suggest. They also did a good job of building variation into their instrumentals, so that while there is a bit of repetiti...

Song Review:: Sungjin (DAY6): 30- Check Pattern {Debut}

Image
  Release date: 2024 November 05 Album tracklist: Covered in Love, Check Pattern , I don't wanna do anything, Nowhere You Are, as always, Wednesday Night, EASY, You Wake Me Up, I don't wanna lose, Memories  Album runtime: 33 minutes  Catch up time for me begins! DAY6 is having something of a surge right now, and I couldn't be happier for them. Which also makes it the perfect time for Sungjin to have his solo debut. If you're new here, welcome. I love debuts. If you're not, then you know how excited I get for debuts. The world of possibilities is at his feet. Any bad things in the future? They haven't happened yet. To quote my favorite book of all time, "Isn't it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?" Replace the word mistakes with misfortunes, and that sums up the beauty of debuts, even for established artists. It's all excitement and hope, the exhilaration of uncertain and something new. Debuts are so exciting. A...

Music Show Wins: Week of 10/2 - 10/8

Image
Assuming this works, I'm going to start including the music show wins in a weekly post. Mondays are apparently the break day for the music shows. But I'm including the weekly performance on After School Club, which can be watched live on YouTube each week at 13:00 KST and is focused on international audiences, so the primary language is English with live Korean translations and subtitles. You can also watch them after the fact. Current hosts of After School Club are Aron of NU'EST, and Allen and Taeyoung of Cravity. I'm sure it's fairly obvious why I'm including After School Club (hereafter referred to as ASC).  And here are the various performances! Show Champion: Kang Daniel "Electric Shock" MCountdown: Yeonjun "GGUM" (note: This is from the 20240926 episode of MCountdown; if I can find a performance, I'll update) Music Bank: NCT Wish "Steady" Show! Music Core: Key "Pleasure Shop" (note: I can't tell you how hap...

Song Review:: DAY6: Fourever- HAPPY

Image
Release date: 2024 March 18 Album tracklist:  Welcome to the Show , HAPPY , The Power of Love, Get The Hell Out, Sad Ending, Let Me Love You, didn't know Album runtime: 24 minutes If it seems odd that I'm reviewing a song that came out in March, you would be correct. I wasn't intending to, but events being such as they are and my ridiculous ideas being what they are, here I am. This is also going to royally mess with my organization system for the moment, but that means I'm going to have to do a couple of March reviews to pad out the page this inevitably goes into. I'm making more work for myself with the weekly wins on the music shows. Hence this seven-month-late review. So look for that. Enough whining from me! Congrats on the win, DAY6! From the bottom of my heart, even though I'm sad you had to beat NU'EST's record, I'm glad you're did beat it, and now you've gotten a couple of wins on different songs in the last few weeks. The title is v...

Song Review:: DAY6: Band Aid- Melt Down

Image
  Release date: 2024 September 02 Album tracklist: Monster, Melt Down , She Smiled, Shxtty Game, Help Me Rock&Roll, Counter, I'm Fine, Still There Album runtime: 25 minutes I love proper bands. There's something so satisfying about them, which I'm almost positive stems from my mother's influence with the 80's hairbands, and as I'm getting to know the Korean bands, I'm liking them just as well. Also, look at that glorious  runtime. That's a proper album.  My favorite thing about Melt Down  is the fact that it sounds like either an anime opening song or the theme song for a sitcom from the 90s. Every time I listen to it, I can't help but think of Full House . That's the vibe. I don't think the song of this song is my favorite from the album, but I still very much enjoy it. The vocals and everything are great. Actually, I just love most of the album. I think there's only one song I wouldn't be happy to just leave on repeat, but they ...
