KCON LA 2025: Day 1

Image
 I waited until I had access to my laptop again before getting to work on this. I figured if I was going to do this little blog thing, I'd do it right, and while these won't be properly traditional reviews, I'd still like to share my thoughts, such as they are. I'm going to preface this with saying that if y'all have been following this for a while, y'all know that I have opinions on certain things, but I also recognize that this is an incredibly difficult job that they do, and they deserve our respect because they have to put up with a lot and have to do a lot in order to have this profession. It's part of why I have frustrations with debuting minors, especially fifteen or younger, and with short songs and with bland songs. But in most instances, the idols are hella talented. It's just that they're not shown off well. Now, if you're still reading and you're new here, welcome! If you're not new here, welcome back!  Let's get into it! ...

Music Show Wins:: Week of 6/11 - 6/17

Image
   I fully count Seventeen TV (AKA the green prison) as a survival show sort of, which makes every win this week from a group that was in a survival show. Exciting? Absolutely. Two first wins for songs this week as well, so that's super exciting as well. Lots to celebrate, you know. For the After School Club re-run as they're still on hiatus, it's 2014 MBLAQ being all manly, with Eric and Kevin as the hosts. I really enjoyed getting to know the group a little bit considering I've done both a BBS post as well as a GH post on them. Show Champion: Seventeen "Thunder" MCountdown: Enhypen "Bad Desire (With or Without You)" Music Bank: Seventeen "Thunder" Show! Music Core: Enhypen  "Bad Desire (With or Without You)" Inkigayo: Enhypen  "Bad Desire (With or Without You)" ASC Performance: 20140401 MBLAQ "Be A Man" The Show: izna "Beep"

Song Review:: izna: Beep

Image
Release date: 2025 June 9 Album tracklist: Beep, Beep - Japan Edition Album runtime: 5  minutes  I'm hoping this gets added to a later album, both versions actually, but it's an interesting strategy to bundle their Japanese debut with their new Korean single. Is it their Japanese debut proper? I don't know. What I do know is that I'm actually really excited for this. I'm kind of annoyed about the runtime because I'm not sure what the actual point is to having a single that is so far from being six minutes long that Spotify is rounding down for it. I'm sure you're all tired of hearing it. I'm tired of having to say it. But I will continue to point it out in the hopes that enough people realize how much of a problem this is and speak up about it.  If I had to describe the instrumentals in two words, they'd be "fairy dubstep." Which is a weird combination of words to use, but I really can't think of any words that describe the vibe of ...

Song Review:: izna: SIGN

Image
Release date: 2025 March 31 Album track list:  SIGN Album runtime: 3 mi nutes  I'm coming up on the tail end of the March releases, thank goodness. I suspect that this is actually a pre-release single, but I'm not marking it as such until such a time as it's confirmed as this is being marketed as a digital single. I actually like izna. I think they're a solid group, and here is the review I did for their debut song . I'm just deeply annoyed by this run time, as you should expect from me. There's a little bit of haunted doll aesthetic to the instrumentals that smooths back with the first pre-chorus to something with a stronger beat and a stronger stand. I'm getting some mid-80s feel from a couple of points in the song where the synth is particularly noticeable. But generally speaking, even when everything about the song softens, there's still plenty of texture and depth to dig your teeth into without immediately feeling the need to brush your teeth. And s...

Song Review:: izna: n/a- IZNA{Debut}

Image
Release date: 2024 November 25 Album tracklist: IZNA , TIMEBOMB, IWALY - izna Version, DRIP, FAKE IT Album runtime: 13 minutes  The project group from I-Land 2 is finally debuting. I say finally. It's a little weird seeing names I actually recognize in the debut list. Unlike ZEROBASEONE and Kep1er, their survival show siblings under WAKEONE, izna has a standard contract so, assuming something weird doesn't happen, they should be around for more than a few years. And, because they're a newly debuted group, I get to take a look at their ages in slight trepidation because while I remember that there were some fairly young contestants, I don't remember them making it to the end. But I'm happy to report that they barely squeak by with the majority of age and the maknae turning seventeen pretty soon. Her birthday is in January. The runtime physically pains me though. The title track is barely over two and a half minutes, and only one of the songs is over three, and that...
