Song Review:: Stray Kids: KARMA- CEREMONY

Image
Release date: 2025 August 22 Album tracklist: BLEEP, CEREMONY , CREED, MESS, In My Head, Half Time, Phoenix, Ghost, 0801, CEREMONY (Festival Version), CEREMONY (English Version) Album runtime: 32 minutes  Congrats to my Baby Stay friend who has graduated to Toddler Stay! Whoooo! And the fact that they spent the tour giving spoilers and no one noticed. When they revealed that, I had to blink and sigh. It's fine. I'm just being clowned this year by my groups.  I could swear, I can feel that drum or bass in my bones, but I'm not even listening to it in a way that would allow me to feel it in my bones. This song doesn't feel like it's as long as it is, which is both weird and a shame. We've got kind of an Indian vibe to the whole thing layered over the top of the bass and the drums that is just satisfying to hear, you know? Also, the siren alarms is a very nice addition. This is going to be a really good performance song, which is good considering K-Pop in general i...

Greatest Hits:: Stray Kids: My Pace

Image
I tossed some potentials at Tumblr in a poll and this was what came back in first place, so here we go! Yes, I've gone back to the wasteland that is Tumblr, discovered that I'm considered ancient and decrepit for how long I've HAD a Tumblr account, and had to relearn how to Tumblr. But, that's fine! My Pace is one of the songs that had to be rerecorded following the departure of the former ninth member, so I'm not quite sure how to navigate the differences. I really want to be respectful of the situation and try to find as many post-departure performances and events as I can, but it may not be especially possible in all cases. In any case, I won't mention his name, because I'm aware that there are feelings surrounding his departure on all sides, and I follow the direction of Chan, who prefers that material of the nine of them not be used anymore. So all of that to say, I'm going to focus on the eight members as they are now and not mention the former ni...

Music Show Wins: Week of 01/08 - 01/14

Image
It looks like we may be getting more music shows back up and running if this week is any indication, but the most exciting news of all is that this week was a group's first first place on a music show! Congrats to n.SSign! Took about a year and a half, but I'm so happy for them. G-Dragon also got the Triple Crown on Inkigayo this week, which opens the trophy back up to someone else for next week, and that's without promotions. On After School Club, Allen and Taeyoung were absent, so Jayn Lee, former leader of TO1, joined Aron as co-host for n.SSign to come out and play a little. And in a both funny and adorable moment, Aron complimented them on smelling good. So if you're a fan, at least one of them smells really nice. Both of the hosts struggled a little with the MC Challenge, which remains my favorite segment, and the members had some interesting insights for the Question Corner. Show Champion: N/A MCountdown: Stray Kids "Walkin on Water" (note: I think I ...

Music Show Wins: Week of 12/25 - 12/31

Image
The second half of the week is entirely silent, and because of the regularly scheduled awards shows, some of which have been canceled or postponed, there was only one win this week: Stray Kids. The ASC was a pre-recorded yearly recap of some of their favorite moments, where the MCs (Aron, Allen, Taeyoung) played some of the games they hosted for the guests. It was funny and enjoyable and a surprise as I figured it would have been postponed, but I assume it was aired because it was pre-recorded. Show Champion: N/A MCountdown: N/A Music Bank: Stray Kids "Walkin on Water" (note: should their performance, had they done one, show up, I'll update this with the correct day's performance) Show! Music Show Wins: Week of 12/18 - 12/24

Essentially, if there isn't a show this week, there probably won't be one next week as well. But, for the two that are still airing, I will faithfully record the wins for Stray Kids and G-Dragon. Also, Younite was on ASC, it was festive, and they were precious. I love all the Ace of Ace reunions that keep happening on After School Club. They just keep complimenting each other, and I love it. I also really loved their introductions. They were adorable. And as soon as it was time for the MC Challenge, I knew Aron was going to struggle with it, but even Taeyoung had a little bit of stuggle. Allen had it down very quickly.  Show Champion: N/A MCountdown: N/A Music Bank: Stray Kids "Walkin on Water" Show! Music Core: G-Dragon (BIGBANG) "Home Sweet Home" (note: he still hasn't performed this anywhere but the MAMAs) 12 Inkigayo: N/A ASC Performance: Younite "Taste"  (note: the MC challenge starts at 18:40, which was a lot later than normal) The Show:...

Song Review:: Stray Kids: Hop- Walkin On Water

Image
Release date: 2024 December 13 Album tracklist: Walkin on Water, Bounce Back, U (Feat. TABLO), Walkin On Water (HIP Ver.), Railway (Bang Chan), Unfair (Felix), HALLUCINATION (I.N), Youth (Lee Know), So Good (Hyunjin), ULTRA (Changbin), Hold my hand (Han), As we are (Seungmin) Album runtime: 34 minutes  The buzz I've been hearing all day is that the mixtape is fire, Chan is a legend, Lee Know and Han are being Han and Lee Know, Changbin dropped a song that's like every kick-butt YA movie, and Seungmin went looking for blood and then to patch up the wounds he caused. Which is also par for the course if I understand correctly. Also, I think the album artwork design is really cool, using the Chinese characters to form the word "hop." But the runtime? Two and a half minutes is not long enough to warm up food. This is not it. There are essentially two things that make the instrumentals stand out from the normal generic hip-hop trappings. I don't use generic to be a bad...

Song Review:: Stray Kids: GIANT- GIANT {Japanese}

Image
Release date: 2024 November 13 Album tracklist: GIANT , Chk Chk Boom -Japanese ver.-, NIGHT, Falling Up, WHY?, Saiyan, Aiwokuretanoninaze, Christmas Love, NIGHT -English ver.-, Falling Up -English ver.- Album runtime: 31 minutes  Even though I don't do a lot of the Japan releases, my Stay friend asked me if I would do this one. And so I shall! And I deeply approve of the run time. Ah, industrial music. It's the pinging and clanging of metal that makes me smile fondly, which is likely due to the fact that while I was watching the movie Looper  with commentary (because that's what I, a movie nerd, do in my spare time), they were talking about making the music and going out and recording in a parking garage, I think, sounds while banging different bits of metal together to get the specific sounds that Rian Johnson, the director, wanted with the music. The last time I watched it with commentary was prior to The Last Jedi  coming out, so I may be misremembering specifics. But ...

September 2024 Wrap Up: We'll Meet Again, Don't Know Where, Don't Know When

Image
The official start of this little music review blog! I'm proud of it. And, again, thank you for everyone who has read even a single post so far, even if you aren't reading this one. I am simply happy and grateful and will endeavor to continue this honesty with love and recognition of the hard work of the artists. And for the one person who seems to be reading every single one, thank you and I love you. You make my morning every day. September of 2024 saw a couple of debuts, a re-debut, and some comebacks I was very much looking forward to, as well as some I would have been looking forward to had I been listening to the group/artist already. The ones I personally was emotionally invested are as follows: Vahn (NINE.i): They were the first group I saw in person, and the reason I watched Boy's Planet, after the fact of course because I didn't get into K-Pop until after ZB1 had already debuted. I love their voices, and I have yet to run into a song I didn't like by them...
