Battle of the B-Sides:: VANNER: WANT U BACK

Image
I know that The Roulette Wheel gave me VANNER to do, but I was genuinely pleased about this because I love this group. They're goofy goombahs with incredible voices. Also, Gon is a day older than SCoups, who is a day older than Minhyun. That's a clump. I was originally going to do Diamonds  or Savior from their first post- Peak Time  mini album, but then as I was listening to VENI VIDI VICI, waffling between the two songs, I realized I should probably do the one that I have in more of my playlists. Thus, WANT U BACK . The entire album is great though. Highly recommended.  Good news, the song has been out long enough that they have done performances of it. And you'll also be getting one of my favorite things: choreography video. Because they released that a few months ago. So they have a pair of rappers in the group. The always impressive Gon and Sungkook of the deep voice, currently doing his military service. Normally I have to warm up to rapping, which I'm working on...

Song Review:: Secret Number: Starlight- Starlight

Image
Release date: 2023 August 24 Album tracklist: Starlight , Crazy Love Album runtime: 7 minutes I know literally nothing about this group other than they're a fourth gen girl group. That's it. I have a single song of theirs (it hilariously happens to be this one) in my Junk Drawer playlist, which is filled with songs I just haven't gotten around to listening to, so this will be a nice treat, and also my very first impression of the group. So let's get to it! The song is plagued by much of the same trends that are still going on with girl groups, but this time with a space theme so the airy, floaty vibes actually make sense. One of the cool things about this song is the fact that it takes advantage of a dual speaker system to make the sound of the song bigger without adding anything or actually affecting the volume in anyway. Plus, the song has some very distinct science fiction warbling and warping, and the section where that becomes very blatant is also where the song en...

Song Review:: Lucy: Fever- Haze

Image
Release date: 2023 August 17 Album tracklist: Hot!, Haze , Magic, So What Album runtime: 15 minutes I thought I'd do another August 2023 release, and saw that Lucy had an EP drop that month! I'm sure it's become fairly obvious by now that I've become a really big fan of theirs. Any excuse to listen to them, I will 100% take. This is ballad rock at its finest. BTOB could have been this. BTOB almost was this. Maybe not with the violin, which is an incredibly important part of Lucy's sound, but Lucy is essentially the actual band version. Healers. I have to hand it to them. They've found their niche and they're sticking to it, as they should. I don't know what it is about the combination of the violin with the standard band arrangement, but,  wow,  does it work. I really like how the song is bookended by the quiet guitar solo with the powerful, emotive instrumentals in the middle. They just really throw everything they have into their singing, don't the...

Song Review:: n.SSign: Birth of Cosmo- Wormhole: New Track {Debut}

Image
Release date: 2023 August 09 Album tracklist: Higher, Wormhole: New Track , SPICE, Melody, Home, SPICE (Inst.), Melody (Inst.), Home (Inst.) Album runtime: 26 minutes Since I've been looking for a few more reviews to add to last year's August releases, I went for a debut that thankfully is from a group where all the members were adults at debut. Not that it helped with Eddie's later difficulties. I genuinely hope he's doing better right now and getting the help he needs, but this was before that, when everything was bright and hopeful and good. Sometimes it's good to remember the good times. It helps us withstand the hard. Fighting, Eddie. Wow, those instrumentals are particularly appropriate for me to be reviewing during the Month of Spookening. There's something about discordant high notes that sets my teeth on edge, in a good way. It's likely partially caused by my love of the Halloween  movie and its theme, as well as how often xylophones show up in horr...

Song Review:: XEED: Blue- Blue

Image
Release date: 2023 August 01 Album tracklist: Blue , With U, You&I, Hold my hand, Priceless Album runtime: 17 minutes  On slower days like this, I like to find a random release and review it because there are so many albums that have released even in just the last two months when I've been writing these reviews. This one seems old comparatively speaking, but I feel weird having just NINE.i on the page for previous releases. And yes, I know that in a couple of months, I'll be moving the four months of reviews for 2024 to the page there, but that still leaves NINE.i as the outlier. So! I grabbed a random release from the same month as that album. I'm not sure I've even heard of this group, so I'm looking forward to doing this. Ah. That's why.  This is one of the short-lived groups. Debuted December of 2022, disbanded this last April, so not even eighteen months. Well, given how I got into K-Pop, I'm not going to turn them away, because they deserve to be r...

Song Review:: NINE.i: New Mind- Power Up

Image
Release date: 2023 August 03 Album tracklist: One,  Turn It Off , Like Crazy,  Power up ,  Hurt , Highschool Love Album runtime: 20 minutes  Am I hoping that this renewed activity by NINE.i is an indication that we're getting an album by the end of the year, and that this is to increase their internet footprint and gain some small amount of traction again now that they're back off their legal induced hiatus? Absolutely. Things have been resolved apparently. NINE.i is active again. Life is good. Just because I can and because this is my little review blog and I make the rules, at the bottom of this, I'm also going to add their original comeback stage on The Show, because you know a song is fire when a shoe comes off during the performance. And also, Vahn couldn't perform the choreography before, but he can now!  I've said it more than once, but I really like the fact that this has a member writing and producing the songs. Vahn. Vahn is awesome. You know, I just ...

Song Review:: NINE.i: New Mind- Hurt

Image
Release date: 2023 August 03 Album tracklist: One, Turn It Off , Like Crazy, Power up , Hurt , Highschool Love Album runtime: 20 minutes I'm not sure how to classify this one. It'll get lost if I don't classify it like I normally would, but also, it'll get lost if I don't because it will be the only outlier. Although I did say that I might do earlier ones... Oh, well. The performance video came out this month, so I'm counting it as a release even though the song came out last year. I'll figure out classifications for it later when I get another song from last August.  I have a soft spot for NINE.i. I love Turn It Off , so much in fact that it was a top listen alongside my ridiculous numbers for Face by NU'EST (800+ streams in the space of about three months. In my defense, I was trying to learn the words by reading the Hangeul, because I like making my life difficult). They have some adorably cute songs. And watching Seowon on Boys' Planet with his ...
