Song Review:: Big Ocean: Make It Up To You

Image
Release date: 2026 May 19 Album tracklist: Make It Up To You Album runtime: 3 minutes  I get so happy every single time that they release something, and it looks like we're going back to our debut strategy of singles, then bundling into a mini album. At least, I hope that's what the plan is. It's a good plan for now.  Ballad! Almost a ballad! Okay. I'm calm about this. That was a nice little fake-out they gave us, and I'd be more upset about it, but the song is comfortingly solid in a way that I enjoy a lot. There's nothing particularly grating about the song because the drums never quite go fully into skittering beat territory, though they are in the vicinity without committing. It's amazing the difference in a song when you change the instrumental.  This is such a cute song. It's an apology, yeah. But it's very cute and I think they're speaking French at one point. I'll be checking the lyrics later to confirm that. But there's a decent ...

Song Review:: Big Ocean: THE GREATEST BATTLE- One Man Army

Image
Release date: 2026 March 03 Album track list: Alive, One Man Army , Back, Cold Moon, Alive (Inst.), One Man Army  (Inst.), Back  (Inst.), Cold Moon  (Inst.) Album runtime: 20 mi nutes  First coverage post for March! There were a few of them today, so we're just going to start with these guys because I have been lax and missed one. And all of the songs on the mini album got their instrumental only version, so I'm happy. Oh, I'm ready for the vocals to go with this. This is full on Final Fantasy combat music for a boss battle. If it wasn't unprofessional to go with caps lock, the next two sentences would be full caps lock. We get combat music with a violin and a piano? Are you kidding me? I'm fully in love. There are even sword clanging sound effects and the sound of the ocean. This is just a soundtrack instrumental. I don't know what else to say about it because all I want is to see if I like the vocals even a third as well as I like the instrumental so I can add...

April 2025 Wrap-Up: April Showers...

Image
Howdy, folks and cowfolks!  Starting off with the debuts! I actually have one still sitting in my drafts so that will have to happen eventually, but I also only covered three of the others: CLOSE YOUR EYES , ifeye , and SWEET:CH . I'm still frustrated by certain trends regarding girl group debuts right now, but the two boy groups didn't frustrate me in the same way.  Also debuting were  SKINZ (a virtual boy group), TSSJ (a virtual girl group), VVS , OSDS , HITGS , and  UDTT . I mentioned it in the review I wrote for one of their later songs, but there's also a boy group called VVS and that's also the name of Vanner's fandom. So if you're into that debut, be aware that there may be some future confusion. Hopefully the company changes the name. It's been known to happen. Songs I was looking forward to: Solar (MAMAMOO): I'm always going to be really excited about anything MAMAMOO as a group or as soloists do, because you know we're basically guarante...

Song Review:: Big Ocean: UNDERWATER- Attention

Image
Release date: 2025 April 20 Album tracklist: SINKING, FADE OUT, Attention , END OF TIME Album runtime: 13 minutes  I kept sending the concept photos for this album to my Stay friend, complete with key smashing and insane gibberish. That's it. That is the note I have for this song, other than the title track is two and a half minutes long. I had hope from the album runtime. Alas. That does mean that the other songs have some heft to them in the length department. Happy one year anniversary, Big Ocean! I've been enjoying watching you on your journey, and to celebrate them and TWS who released the next day, I painted my nails blue. The song is best enjoyed in the context of the rest of the album, for the record. This has moments where it gets rather slinky, but it doesn't stay there too long, because that build in energy through the pre-chorus courtesy of the drums and the guitar stepping out to take some spotlight does well to come often enough to provide some much needed ext...

Song Review:: Big Ocean- brighT

Image
Release date: 2025 February 10 Album tracklist: brighT Album runtime: 2 minutes  Guess who released a new single! Guess who I am very excited about releasing a new single! If you answered "Big Ocean" to both of those questions, you'd absolutely be getting those answers correct. Here's your celebratory lollipop. I'm not a fan of the runtime, as we can also guess. This is like a midi lullaby. The first thing I was reminded of with that opening is an 8-bit video a la Pokémon or Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest , the early ones with the incomprehensible coding. It maintains threads of those vibes through the rest of the song, while also reminding me of a very specific alarm sound that is genuinely raising my heartrate in the panic of hearing it. I'd almost call it threateningly soothing, discordant in its instrumentals without being grating, but it doesn't quite lean into that sound enough. With this specific group, there are certain vocal things I normally look...

November 2024 Wrap Up: Awards Season Is Upon Us!

Image
ðŸŽ‰ðŸŽˆðŸŽ¶ Happy birthday to meee! And also my best friend! She's amazing and smart and talented, and I love her.  Thank you all to everyone who has read any of the posts or offered suggestions for my GH or BBS posts! I really appreciate it. And, excitingly for me, I've got a couple more regulars, so I'd like to personally thank y'all for finding my posts before I get them either on Tumblr or Reddit.  This post is always so long. Oof. But it's also thirty days to cover, and I still have to leave things out.  The debuts that happened this month that I covered:  Yuta (NCT)  as a soloist and with his Japanese debut,  Sungjin (DAY6)  as a soloist,  Jin (BTS)  as a soloist, Irene (Red Velvet) as a soloist, The CrewOne , ODD YOUTH , LOVEONE , and izna . Some debuts that happened this month that I've mentioned:  ToTh6y ,  13Found ,  KELT9b , and  KJRGL . Some debuts that happened that I didn't know about: UN1CON , W!TCHX , and...

Song Review:: Big Ocean: Follow- Flow

Image
Release date: 2024 November 12 Album tracklist:   Flow , Glow, Blow, Slow (Feat. Young K (DAY6)) Album runtime: 12 minutes  THEY ARE FINALLY RELEASING AN ALBUM. I COULD NOT BE MORE EXCITED FOR THEM. For the uninformed, they're K-Pop's first hard of hearing group, and they're awesome. If you want to get to know them, I highly  recommend getting on their TIKTOK page about 11 am KST. They usually do lives about 3-4 times a week and those lives range from the fans getting to sit in on (muted) dance or sign language lessons to care package/gift unboxings from the fans to drawing time. You never know what they'll be doing. And I think they're eventually going to be getting another member, so learning the current three now is good for when the next one joins. And they dropped it at 2 instead of 6, which means I am awake for it. Still giving up sleep, but staying up is a lot easier than waking up. Shout out to my night owls!  Clearly all of their singles have been und...
