Song Review:: WayV (NCT): Big Bands- Big Bands

Image
Release date: 2025 July 18 Album tracklist:  BIG BANDS , Ice Tea, WOAH, Sad Eyes, Your Song, BIG BANDS - Korean Version Album runtime: 18 minutes  It's a good time for me to finally get this one written. My apologies to the fans for being so late on this one. It got a music show win on The Show (still not bitter about this, it's fine) the end of July, and I've been meaning to do this since then; it just kept getting lower and lower on the immediately necessary. So here's the thing. I actually love big bands. I spent about two years listening to basically only music from the 40s and 50s. I have a list of artists from then that if they weren't dead, I'd be eagerly awaiting new music from them (my glee with the V and Bing duet is partly due to the fact that a new(ish) Bing song dropped? Be still my soul). I've got some massive playlists that I love. Honestly, this feels like big band as imagined by hip-hop artists. It's actually a pretty cool combination a...

Song Review:: WayV (NCT): Eternal White- Eternal White {Chinese}

Image
Release date: 2025 December 08 Album tracklist: The Fifth Season, Eternal White , Moment in Time, First Time, Strange Tears, Stay, Lover After Me Album runtime: 22 minutes  I've actually been looking forward to this specific album's release since it got announced. SM winter songs hit different, you know? And we only got a couple last year, so this one is our start of them. Hopefully we get a few more. I don't know if there are any scheduled though. I also traditionally like WayV, so that was another reason I was looking forward to this one. Also, other than the first song, there isn't a single one that's less than three minutes long and I am here to support that. Okay, I hear you, saxophone. They're touching the jazz, the most Christmassy sound, without going full jazz. It starts off fairly seasonal, but that transitions into something that was a little bit of a disappointment, because other than the intro, the song has an unchanging beat and even when the song ...

Music Show Wins:: Week of 07/23 - 07/29

  Big 3 Company domination this week! And! Even cooler! We got the first Triple Crown in a while! We don't have as many videos as I'd like, because one of the songs I don't think has been promoted on music shows, and one of them I had to go back to a week prior for the performance, but still. Only Inkigayo did not have a show this week. For After School Club, I think this is the most recent re-run I've shared. It's episode 629 from 2024 and the group ARTMS for their first full album! Aron was the only one MCing that week as Allen and Taeyoung were absent. The angel dance from the dance challenge was cool to watch. It's really pretty. (Also, Aron had to wear angel wings and I couldn't be happier about this, I remember absolutely cackling when I watched it live because of how adorable it was). Show Champion: BLACKPINK "JUMP" MCountdown: BLACKPINK "JUMP" Music Bank: NCT Dream "CHILLER" Show! Music Core: NCT Dream "CHILLER...

Music Show Wins: Week of 12/04 - 12/10

  WayV absolutely dominated this week. Well done. MCountdown , the same as the past month or so, has not had a showing, yet again. Show! Music Core and Inkigayo joined them in that, so we only had three possible wins this week, and WayV got all three! Good for them. A.C.E returned to ASC as a full group for the first time in a while now that they're all finished with their enlistments. They brought the easy version of the dance challenge for the hosts, which Aron was grateful for. They're goofballs. Show Champion: WayV "Frequency (Korean Version)" MCountdown: N/A Music Bank: N/A Show! Music Core: WayV "Frequency (Korean Version)" (note: this is from their 20241130 performance) Inkigayo: N/A ASC Performance: A.C.E "PINATA"   (note: the MC challenge starts at 12:08 this time around, although if you want unadulterated chaos, you'll also want to watch the segment at 30:51, clothes go flying) (also note: because they're not releasing the perfor...

Music Show Wins: Week of 11/27 - 12/03

Aespa got the triple crown on Inkigayo this week! ATEEZ and WayV got their first wins with their new songs. There were no performances on either Show Champion, nor MCountdown, nor were there any wins for either program. Jay spent a lot of time singing on ASC, and there wasn't an MC Challenge, which I'd be upset about, but he sang so much that I can't be upset. Also, he did a quick cover of Mariah Carey's Christmas song, and his vocal runs and the quality of his tone just makes me melt a little inside.  Just as a reminder, the links in the chart go to my reviews, and the link down on ASC is for the full hour program. And I include the stage for the music shows, unless the winner didn't perform it on that day, in which case, I pull usually another live performance. Show Champion: N/A MCountdown: N/A Music Bank: ATEEZ "Ice on my Teeth"  (note: I don't think they're still promoting, so have the performance from 20241115) Show! Music Core: aespa "W...

Song Review:: WayV (NCT): FREQUENCY- FREQUENCY - Korean Version

Image
Release date: 2024 November 25 Album tracklist: FREQUENCY - Korean Version ,  HIGH FIVE , TWIST, Filthy Rich, Call Me, Frequency Album runtime: 17 minutes  Okay, I'm finally getting to the actual title track of the album. I tried to avoid it until I was ready and was mostly successful in that endeavor. I apparently have Scooby-Doo on the mind because these instrumentals (combined with the melody of the vocals) kind of remind of a cross between the general vibes of Zombie Island and Where's My Mummy, but the synth version of that child as opposed to either rock or jazz. Also, it's got a very cyberpunk feel to it. If you were to tell me that this was actually from some science fiction something from the 80s, I would one hundred percent believe you. That's the level to which it vibes with a futuristic bike chase scene in a city at nighttime filled with chrome and neon. The rhythm and the beat are somewhat powerful, but not overwhelmingly so, and almost sleek. I appreciate...

Song Review:: WayV (NCT): FREQUENCY- HIGH FIVE {Pre-Release}

Image
Release date: 2024 November 25 Album tracklist: FREQUENCY - Korean Version , HIGH FIVE , TWIST, Filthy Rich, Call Me, Frequency Album runtime: 17 minutes  Because the city I live in doesn't have K-Pop come to it very often (read: almost never, I think we've had three total groups and that's only been in the last year or so), any time a concert is shown in theaters, I definitely go to it, even if the group isn't one I necessarily see. Did I see the NCT mega-concert in theaters? Yes. Could I name all the subunits? I think I could have at that point, but I always worry that I'm forgetting one, still. How many members did I know their names? I knew Mark, Johnny, Yuta, and Ten. That's it. That number has gone up some, but I'd describe myself as "vaguely familiar". Still, I have a member in WayV that I know and can identify on sight, and that's good enough for right now until I decide to start looking into them more. But WayV is also one of two subun...
