Song Review:: POW: Gimme Love

Image
Release date: 2025 February 17 Album track list:  Gimme Love Album runtime: 3 mi nutes  With what I'm assuming is probably a digital single, POW has officially stepped into 2025. Their singles I covered last year, and it's a little crazy I've been doing this long enough that I'm starting to see repeat names, were enjoyable and a little surprising. Full disclosure, I'm writing this on my phone at an airport, so if there are any mistakes, I'll try to catch them, but assume it was autocorrect and I'll go back over it when I'm back home. We've got the standard guitar and drums for the instrumentals, soft, mellow, and wholly fitting for the topic at hand. This is one of those super soft love songs that speak of the peace one finds with a partner who understands. We get some audience participation snapping that could very much function as audience participation clapping. Much in line with the instrumentals, their voices are so soft. This is the kind of son...

Music Show Wins: Week of 10/30 - 11/05

Well, it's a girl group domination this week for the wins. The fact that Ros é isn't doing much promoting in Korea is deeply inconvenient for me when I'm trying to share performances of each win. This is a joke. If she and Bruno Mars keep winning, that's fine. Genuinely couldn't be happier for them. Show Champion: aespa "Whiplash" (note: I couldn't find the performance if they did one, so I'm going to use Inkigayo's performance) MCoun tdown: Ros é x Bruno Mars "APT." (note: I'm just going to include the music video here again) Music Bank: aespa "Whiplash" Show! Music Core: Ros é x Bruno Mars "APT." Inkigayo: Ros é x Bruno Mars "APT." ASC Performance: POW The Show: tripleS "Hit the Floor"

Song Review:: POW: Boyfriend- Boyfriend

Release date: 2024 October 21 Album tracklist: Boyfriend , I, Bae, Sunset Album runtime: 12 minutes  I've been gloriously excited for this release. I legitimately have no idea where or when I added this group to my list that I pay attention to, and I'm very relieved that they were all adults at debut. Also, they just had their one-year anniversary about a week ago, so congrats to them! ...Are you seriously telling me that POW did a remake of freaking Avril Lavigne's Girlfriend ? This is the reality that I am living in?  Be still, my soul. The punk rock lover in me just started headbanging. The punk rock lover in me just stopped headbanging in absolute deep confusion because these instrumentals are so much softer. Even the chorus is a more muted version of the original. I was hoping that the introduction featured here would build in energy, but it did the opposite. The tone of the song shifts dramatically for the verses, softening with the feeling of pleading puppy dog eyes....

Song Review:: POW: Boyfriend- Sunset {Pre-release}

Release date: 2024 October 21 Album tracklist:  Boyfriend , I, Bae,  Sunset Album runtime: 12 minutes  So at some  point, I saw something about them on...probably Instagram, because after KCon LA when I went to find them on YouTube, I found that I'd already followed them. I do not remember doing this, but apparently I really like them, even if I can never remember I do. I haven't found the song that I'm obsessed with yet, but it doesn't change that I like them. This is an acoustic song with an electric guitar. I'm almost positive that's not an acoustic. My ears were expecting one though. Still, it doesn't change the fact that it doesn't stay mellow and hug-like. It has spurts of energy through the chorus where the drums get to act up a little before settling right back down. This is a take-a-nap-to song. This is a wave-your-phone-flashlight-slowly song. Light sticks could work too since this is K-Pop after all, but there is something fundamentally "...
