Song Review:: Close Your Eyes: OVEREXPOSED- POSE

Image
Release date: 2026 April 21 Album tracklist: POSE , What If I Miss Love? Album runtime: 6 minutes  Because I made the error, I'm going to separate the two B1A4 posts with this one that I also need to do. I also generally really like this group, y'all. I'm not as hyped about the runtime on this song, although the b-side has an acceptable length. As a side note, sometimes I think about how often I use adverbs when I write any of these and the general rule of thumb I was taught (and apparently ignore) was to use as few as possible. Yet, here I am. At least I'm using commas more.  This one has a pretty hip-hop feeling beat, but it's a very slow one. We don't have a ton of variation going on, which is fine, though there are some bars of rests in the instrumental, which I appreciate. This one doesn't really do it for me though, although given what I was doing for the majority of the day yesterday, I imagine this would be a really good cleaning song. It doesn't...

July 2025 Wrap-Up: Free Hugs For Everyone

Image
I was so busy this month. Y'all. I didn't do a ton of the reviews, which is coming back to bite me in the butt now that I'm trying to get my year end post worked on. It's fine. Past Fangirl hates Future Fangirl, and it's completely fine.  July debuts! I only did a single review for a debut group this month, and it was for AHOF , who has been doing quite well for a rookie group. I may get 1verse reviewed because I still feel guilty about not reviewing them. Debuts I didn't cover: CrazAngel (girl group), Tomatomat (girl group), 1verse (boy group), 4X4 (girl group) and SEVENTOEIGHT  (boy group).   Big Ocean JJ (subunit of Big Ocean) also debuted. And Kang Yuchan , the lovely maknae of A.C.E, debuted as a soloist! Songs I was looking forward to: BLACKPINK: Look, this was their first release as a group since I started listening to K-Pop. Even if I don't listen to the group a lot (though I do have a few songs I really like, which is unfortunately a high perc...

April 2025 Wrap-Up: April Showers...

Image
Howdy, folks and cowfolks!  Starting off with the debuts! I actually have one still sitting in my drafts so that will have to happen eventually, but I also only covered three of the others: CLOSE YOUR EYES , ifeye , and SWEET:CH . I'm still frustrated by certain trends regarding girl group debuts right now, but the two boy groups didn't frustrate me in the same way.  Also debuting were  SKINZ (a virtual boy group), TSSJ (a virtual girl group), VVS , OSDS , HITGS , and  UDTT . I mentioned it in the review I wrote for one of their later songs, but there's also a boy group called VVS and that's also the name of Vanner's fandom. So if you're into that debut, be aware that there may be some future confusion. Hopefully the company changes the name. It's been known to happen. Songs I was looking forward to: Solar (MAMAMOO): I'm always going to be really excited about anything MAMAMOO as a group or as soloists do, because you know we're basically guarante...

Music Show Wins:: Week of 11/19 -- 11/25

Image
Okay, first up. We got another Triple Crown, and this should be the last win for this song if my math is correct between the age of the song and the number of wins already. Y'all, I have had NMIXX tagged in here four out of the last five weeks. That's kind of impressive. Also, this was ITZY's first win in almost two years. Girl group power this week for the win, with three of the four slots taken by them. Nice. And I'd really like MCountdown to start doing shows again, but it's award season. Okay. So, funny thing about the After School Club episode (episode 334) this time around. So, the group is 100%, a 2012 debut group (you know how I love 2012 groups and this was around their 6th anniversary), and currently sort of reformed as the group FAVE1 (who I just realized dropped a Christmas single last year, so I'm updating last year's Christmas Caroling post with it because that was adorable). The four of them were so much fun to watch and that album had a l...

Korea Grand Music Awards 2025: Day 2

Image
As with Day 1, I'm just going to let you get right into the performances, and then the winners, without too much input from me at the start. You can get all of that at the end after you watch all the things as we both know that my thoughts are not what you're here for originally. They're just a bonus. Hence why they're at the end. performances AHOF (We Ready (AHOF Ver.) + Pinocchio ) BTOB (Wind and Wish + Only one for me + Missing You + LOVE TODAY ) Close Your Eyes ( X + SOB (KGMA Ver.)) Dayoung (WJSN) ( body ) fromis_9 ( Supersonic + LIKE YOU BETTER (KGMA 2025 Ver.) Hearts2Hearts ( FOCUS ) IDID ( CHAN-RAN ) IVE ( XOXZ + GOTCHA (Baddest Eros) + REBEL HEART ) Jang Minho (Lonely Love + Play the music) KickFlip ( Band-Aid + My First Love Song ) Kiss of Life (k bye + Lucky (Korean Ver.)) Lucy (Where's Your Love + Flowering) NEXZ ( I'm Him + Beat-Boxer ) P1Harmony ( DUH!) Stray Kids (S-Class + In My Head + CEREMONY ) Suho (EXO) (Light The Fire + Who Are You) UN...

Song Review:: Close Your Eyes: blackout- X

Image
Release date: 2025 November 11 Album tracklist: X , SOB, CHIC, 2.0, Who's Dat (Jane Doe), X - English Version Album runtime: 18 minutes   I picked up a lot of boy groups this year from the freshly debuted batch. Close Your Eyes, survival show debuting team, is but one of them, but every single song they've come out with has been awesome. I love the instrumental at the beginning more than life and I wish it was more present throughout the rest of the song. It's gorgeous and immediately had me thinking of the 90s, but I also really like how you can hear the melody being used throughout the song. It's not loud enough that it threatens the vocals, but it does provide an extra layer of sound to sit underneath the vocals and support them. It feels a little familiar, but I'm not sure what exactly I'm reminded of. If I remember, I'll include it. Why do they sound like a newer version of Shinhwa? Vocally, I'm reminded a ton of Perfect Man , and I'm kind of in...

Hello, everyone and welcome to this week's one-stop shop for the music show wins! We are down two music shows, which is unfortunate because that means fewer wins, but we do have a first win for a song!! Whoo!! For the After School Club re-run due to their ongoing hiatus, I'm handing you ep 453, featuring the boy group WEi! First episode of 2021, first time WEi was on, and while its their debut song, they were about a month out from their second mini album. Hosts were Jamie, Heejun, and Jaeyun (AKA Jayn Lee). Music Show Wins:: Week of 07/09 - 07/15

It's not a whole lot of variation this week, which is a little unfortunate. I'd prefer to have more, you know? On the other hand, I am pretty amused that all the wins this week came from groups at the very start of the alphabet. It's cute, and a little funny. aespa is also the only one of the bunch that isn't a rookie anymore, which is always good to see. The rookie groups need the love, attention, and wins to survive. The other interesting thing is that both of those rookie groups are project groups from survival shows. (Love you, Woongki, I hope this group does better for you...) After School Club is still on hiatus, so your re-run for this is ep 199 in 2016, featuring a still rookie group GFRIEND! Our MCs are Eric Nam, Jamie, and Kevin from U-Kiss (most recently known as the singing voice for Mystery Saja!). GFRIEND are absolutely precious. Show Champion: AHOF "Rendezvous" MCountdown: aespa "Dirty Work" Music Bank: AHOF "Rendezvous" Sh...

Song Review:: Close Your Eyes: Snowy Summer- Snowy Summer

Image
Release date: 2025 July 9 Album tracklist: Paint Candy, Snowy Summer , You, Bubble Tea Album runtime: 11 minutes  Close Your Eyes debuted back in April , so I'm a little surprised that they are having a comeback so soon, but I'm not going to be too worried just yet. I hope they're taking care of the maknae and any of the other minors in the group specifically. I do have to say I really enjoyed their entire debut album, so I'm hoping that I like this one as well. The album runtime is a little bit suspect, but the title track is just shy of three minutes, so it could be worse and I'll accept it.  The instrumentals are relatively mild and out of the way, which is really nice, but I'll talk about that when it's time for the vocal section. I like how we have sections where the instrumentals mimic the vocals as it can be reassuring for the performers and with them being about three months old at this point, it could be a very subtle safety net. It's also mild ...

Music Show Wins:: Week of 04/09 - 04/15

Three of the Big 4 are represented this week in the music show wins, but they're not the only ones, which is also cool. I like diversity in an ecosystem because that indicates healthiness for the ecosystem. We've got a couple of first song wins, which is delightful for all of us, and mostly them because those wins are important. And I was waiting for one of those songs to get a win. Also, I couldn't be happier about Close Your Eyes for getting a second (very well deserved in my opinion, that album is amazing and incredible) just about two weeks after debut. Whoo! I did a random scroll to grab an After School Club for this week as they're still on hiatus (which is fine and I'm happy to wait for them; I'm doing a lot of waiting), and after I finished watching it, I found my next one because it was the next recommended for me to watch. It's a group who is regularly a top listen of mine every month and they were on ASC exactly one time. This week, however, fea...

Song Review:: CLOSE YOUR EYES: ETERNALT- All My Poetry {Debut}

Image
Release date: 2025 April 02 Album track list: Close Your Eyes, Subtitled, All My Poetry , How To Dance, Laid Back, To The Woods, Stay 4 Good, Upside down Album runtime: 25 mi nutes  Ah, these are the debuting Project 7 kids that Hui and Moonbyul had a hand in for the show. Nice. It's an interesting choice of name for a K-Pop group, but then there was also the first gen group called 5tion that took me ages to figure out why it's pronounced like it is. As this is a newly debuted group, and from a survival show at that, I do need to look at the ages. I'm quite pleased with the fact that six of the eight songs on this album are longer than three minutes, so if the ages are okay, hopefully I like the group. More than half are adults at debut, the maknae is sixteen turning seventeen this year, so we're good to go! Excellent! I'm reminded of like a silver nail polish that's gotten spilled. This song has that same shiny, liquid effect to it with how smooth it is and the...

Music Show Wins:: Week of 04/02 - 04/08

Triple Crown came in this week, which is so exciting. Don't get me wrong. But you know what's more exciting? Two rookie groups got their first ever wins! Y'all, I cannot even pretend not to be ecstatic over this. This is so exciting! Congrats to KiiiKiii and Close Your Eyes! Whoo!!!!  For the ASC performance this week since they're still on hiatus, I just scrolled randomly through the playlist and the one I stopped on was the one I offer to you all, and I'm very pleased to say that here is Purple Kiss's attendance for Sweet Juice  back in 2023. MC's were Aron from NU'EST as well as Allen and Taeyoung of Cravity. And I have to say, I absolutely love Taeyoung's hair this episode. He looks so good. And it's also really cute that the members did the fanchant while the one fan was doing the dance cover. But you know what's really funny? The voice changing segment. You guys will enjoy it.
