Song Review:: Baekho (NU’EST): RUSH MODE- RUSH

Image
Release date: 2025 November 12 Album tracklist: RUSH , My Sign, Through the Line (feat. Camo) Album runtime: 7 minutes   So many capital letters. Okay, friends. This is his first release since leaving Pledis. I’m about ready to scold him for the song lengths because what do you mean, there are two whole songs that are less than two-and-a-half minutes? Tsk. I use the term “two whole songs” loosely here. But I am, as always, excited to hear what he’s going to give us. I really want to like this one, as I do with most songs, but since he’s one of my NU’EST boys and the only one actually active right now, that want is a little bit more pressing.  Welp. That’s not for me. It’s a very strong EDM, which isn’t necessarily a problem in and of itself, but it’s overpowering. It’s got a really good beat and this would be a great workout song. Considering how much he works out, that also tracks. It’s also one of those songs that Spotify is likely going to be recommending for my Daylist whe...

August 2025 Wrap-Up: The Witch is Back!

Image
 Okay, everyone. Welcome back!!! It's been a hot minute since I've written one of these, but considering how many songs I didn't review over the course of the last three months, I didn't feel like I had enough done to warrant a wrap-up. Still, let's get to it! And yes, the title is a reference to the movie Hocus Pocus , but also, I absolutely adore Nina Simone's . High Priestess of Soul, indeed. Back to K-Pop, first up, our lovely debuts. Now, to be clear, I do have a couple that I'm still planning on covering and once I do, this will be updated, but still. The debuts I covered were N. Top , idntt , AtHeart , Cortis, and soloist ZZONE (cignature/Good Day) . Debuts I'm still planning on covering are Rainbow18 and ZOONIZINI (ASTRO). Other debuts include MADEIN S , OFF EQUALS , IXIA , LIPSTICKERZ , and iii . (I may actually consider LIPSTICKERZ as well because that's a whole mini album and an intriguing concept.) Next section is for the songs I was loo...

Song Review:: Baekho (NU'EST): OFF-ROAD

Image
Release date: 2025 March 14 Album track list:  OFF-ROAD Album runtime: 2 mi nutes ...I would have done this sooner, but the car accident put a slight damper on my productivity. In other news, coloring is really nice when you're having a lot of emotions and you don't want to actively do anything about them.  Happy Thirteenth Anniversary, Baekho. I hope you find a good home. And this is just over two minutes. Baekho. My dude. Why. Okay. We've got a very warm set of instrumentals here. It actually feels like sunshine, and I'd think that even if the cover art didn't look like it does. Even though the the percussion is quite prominent throughout the song in a rather repetitious way, it's soft enough that the song feels comforting rather than exciting. But the problem, and I'm noticing that it's particularly infectious among HYBE artists to have songs that round to two minutes long (I'm thinking specifically of TxT, Enhypen, and Seventeen because I remembe...

August 2024 Wrap-Up: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

 This is going to be the least filled out of these. In the future, I'll be more on top of releases, but considering I started this near the end of the month, I'm going to give myself a pass. Top Releases of the Month : Moonbyul's Is This Love? - I'm really not joking when I say that if this song isn't one of my top listens of the year, I'm going to be really sad. It's basically perfect and...I want more of this. Give me more interesting musical techniques, I beg of the industry. B.A.P's Gone - I just want to wrap myself up in the song and pretend like everything is okay. Is it? I don't know, but what I do know is the fact that they managed to come back together after all the trauma they went through together, even if they aren't fully back together yet, gives me hope for all the groups that didn't deserve what happened to them (and the handful of my small groups that are struggling right now). Honorable Mentions : xikers's Tsuki (Lunatic)...

Song Review:: Baekho (NU'EST) (feat. Jessi): Nutty Nutty

Image
Release date: 2024 September 04 Album tracklist:  Nutty Nutty Album runtime: 2 minutes ...I know they're disbanded, but I refuse to not attach his group to him. Also, really? Two minutes? That's barely long enough to cook a hot pocket.  Nutty Nutty  is a really good dancing song. I like the latin elements to it, as well as the driving, pulsing beat. This song doesn't give you a chance to breathe, not that it's long enough for a pause. A slowdown wouldn't have enough time to recover, so I'm grateful that it doesn't try.  I think this sounds more like a Jessi song featuring Baekho, than a Baekho song featuring Jessi. And I know that both of them have incredible voices, but I also don't think that this song pretends to let their vocals shine, nor do I think that it's supposed to. This is not a song you sing to have your vocals praised.  Waterbomb is PG-13 and above for a reason. I'm more surprised by this combination of artists than I am by the chor...
