Greatest Hits:: VIXX LR (VIXX): Beautiful Liar

Image
 Coming to you straight from The Form (located over on the left if you're looking to submit something yourself, or you can follow that link), this one has actually been sitting in The Form for a minute because I got a few of them that were all similarly vibed, and while I'm into the vibes, I want as much diversity as I can possibly get. But now that we've shifted away from the 2012 boy groups, as much as I love them, I'm happy to go back to their sound, even though I don't know this specific song. But I also got some really good notes from the submitter to include, and those notes are also the reason why I picked this one to do now over some of the others that have been suggested (although do note that if you do submit something over on The Form, the extra comments are unnecessary, just something that is helpful for me if it's not a song/group that I'm super familiar with).  VIXX LR is a subunit of VIXX for Leo and Ravi (and submitter, I want you to know th...

Greatest Hits:: Taeyeon (Girls' Generation): INVU

Image
 Last of the girl group submissions for the moment, then I get to move on to some of the boy groups, but it's not just boy groups. There's a co-ed submission in there, which is such a yay from me. I'm excited for that. But! I'm also very excited for this, because she is a second gen heavy weight, reigning champion of an artist. Award-winning. Best-selling. Chart topping. And that's just her as a soloist, that's not even counting the years before that as the leader of Girls' Generation, which is one of the most well-known groups to come out of K-Pop. I admire her a lot, as you can tell, and I also think she's really cool. And funny. I don't know if she's generally known for her humor, but I think she's hilarious. She's also fairly out-spoken which is something else that I admire about her, but the group turns eighteen this year. If anyone has earned the right to pass judgement on the industry, someone who has been as active as she has the ...

Greatest Hits:: Ladies' Code: Galaxy

Image
 Looking at my submissions, of the five or so I've got left right now, all but two of them are boy groups and one of those two is a soloist. So I'll finish off the girl group submissions and then get going with the boy groups. The submitter for this one specifically pointed me to a performance on Show Champion for this and said that they really admired the group for coming back after the accident with a song like this. Now, I'm mostly familiar with Ladies' Code because that's the group that Ashley from Dive Studios is from, and I love her. I think she's hilarious. But I don't know much about the group or their songs, so this was news to me that something had happened.  This is the group's most streamed song on Spotify, I think, which makes me so soft inside. MYST3RY was Ladies' Code's first single album, released in February of 2016, and their first release as a trio following the loss of EunB and RiSe. Galaxy  has some chops behind it, produced...

Greatest Hits:: EXID: Every Night

Image
 I'm calling this a title track because it was a single, even though the version two wasn't a title track on the album it ended up going on. Thank you to the fan over on Reddit for suggesting this one. You also gave me a few others that I put into my "To Do" playlist so that I have that organized and I won't forget to do it (that playlist is also where I put anything that gets submitted from The Form , fun fact, so don't worry about it getting lost somewhere or me forgetting) Okay, some basic facts about this song. It's actually a rearrangement of their song, Call , from their first mini album, HIPPITY HOP. Written by member LE and produced by LE and Shinsadong Tiger, it looks like it did fairly well on the charts, although unfortunately it didn't get any wins. Okay, that would be leading into this on a downer, which I don't like, so, instead, I'm going to say congrats to EXID for winning Super Rookie of the Year from Arirang's Simply K-Pop...

Greatest Hits:: Stray Kids: My Pace

Image
 I tossed some potentials at Tumblr in a poll and this was what came back in first place, so here we go! Yes, I've gone back to the wasteland that is Tumblr, discovered that I'm considered ancient and decrepit for how long I've HAD a Tumblr account, and had to relearn how to Tumblr. But, that's fine! My Pace is one of the songs that had to be rerecorded following the departure of the former ninth member, so I'm not quite sure how to navigate the differences. I really want to be respectful of the situation and try to find as many post-departure performances and events as I can, but it may not be especially possible in all cases. In any case, I won't mention his name, because I'm aware that there are feelings surrounding his departure on all sides, and I follow the direction of Chan, who prefers that material of the nine of them not be used anymore. So all of that to say, I'm going to focus on the eight members as they are now and not mention the former ni...

GREATEST HITS:: NU'EST W (NU'EST): HELP ME

Image
 Sentimentality here. The fifteenth was their anniversary, and Baekho left Pledis on the fourteenth, and I had my car accident on the thirteenth. It has been a rough few days emotionally and while I had a plan to do another group, the car accident confirmed for me that I should just do this for their anniversary, even though typing for long periods of time (such as doing this) hurts my wrist. And I picked a NU'EST W song, because the W stands for waiting, and that's what we're doing: waiting for them to come back. And I'm not masochistic enough to do Where You At , which got them their first win at all since debut, or Deja Vu , which is so beloved that it also got performed as five later. NU'EST W is the subunit formed after their appearance on Produce 101 S2 until 2019 with the return of Minhyun to the group. The album, Wake, N, hit number on the Korean charts, and this song got a win on Music Bank, which makes it the subunit's fourth win. In 2018. In December ...

Greatest Hits:: MAMAMOO: Starry Night

Image
 Coming up as we are on March 15th, I'm starting to get emotional. Between certain anniversaries, and a certain member leaving his company on the group disbandment date, I'm not doing incredibly well. So, for the dopamine hit, I picked a group that has very little connection to my boys, other than having two more 95z and their maknae being born within days of one of the members, but also one that I already love. MAMAMOO is the girl group version of my emotional support group, BTOB, and I'm into the emotional support right now for myself.  So I picked an emotional support song because I need it and I'm sure that someone else out there needs it. Starry Night  is, as the post title suggests, the title track for their EP "Yellow Flower" from their Four Seasons, Four Colors series (which serves to highlight each of the four members, beginning here with Hwasa). It kind of feels like half the album got a music video of some sort, something I think is super cool, and ...

Greatest Hits:: MBLAQ: Stay

Image
 Summoned for you directly from The Form, it's ironically a song from the same album that I've already done a BBS post from. I chose to do Darling  because of the roulette wheel and shuffle, so that one's on me. But apparently someone out there in the world really likes this album to slide the title track my way as well.  So, I was technically focusing on the repackage album of this for Darling , so you get sort of new information. Released in 2011, this was their first full album. Containing a grand total of thirteen tracks and a runtime of 43 minutes, which averages out to a little more than three minutes a song, it's at a good length, even with the first track dropping the average. It did pretty well on the charts, peaking at second on the Gaon weekly chart and third on the Gaon monthly chart. No music show wins with it, but that doesn't matter because music show wins are not the final dictator of love for a song.  Flashing Lights warning for the music video. Gro...

Greatest Hits:: Yoo Jae Suk (feat. EXO): Dancing King

Image
 This one is a little bit different. It does come from The Form, so that's exciting, but, well, this song isn't my normal fare for a GH song. For one, Yoo Jae Suk isn't a K-Pop artist, he's a comedian as far as I know. EXO, yes. They're definitely K-Pop, but this is new territory. Still! That's okay! The more variety, the better! I just don't know how long this one is going to be, and I feel bad for that right now, but I'm not going to extend it any further than it needs to be. Interestingly, looking up the background to this song suddenly makes GoSe and LOVE Story make more sense. I love learning about the original references to things. This is why I like context and why you all get to suffer through my ramblings of context, because I enjoy being able to contextualize things. I very much am not  a follower of the "art can exist as is and independent of reader influence and author intent" schools of literary criticism.  Okay, so this song came ...

Greatest Hits:: Brown Eyed Girls: Abracadabra

Image
 I decided to do a roulette wheel so I can let the submissions fill up a little bit more again. Thank you to everyone who has submitted! I will get to them, I promise. In the meantime, I wanted something random, and so I present to you a song that I've heard of, but haven't listened to, though I have heard a couple of songs by the group before.   Brown Eyed Girls debuted in 2006, under Nega Network, firmly marking them as an early second generation group. Sound-G was their third studio album, released mid-2009. It won a Bonsang for Cyworld Digital Music Awards in 2010, another Bonsang went to the group at the Seoul Music Awards in 2009, and several other end-of-year awards for Abracadabra  itself. That's impressive. I'm also deeply entertained that as I was looking through the list of songs the lyricists had written thinking to myself, "Why are these songs so familiar?", I found another song I've written a GH post for, so that's exciting ( VOODOO DOLL ...

Greatest Hits:: EXID: Up & Down

Image
 I was actually really excited to get this suggestion via The Form, because this song has apparently been sitting in my Junk Drawer for ages, which means that I get to clean out the playlist a little. That feels a little illegal, but who cares? Thank you, dear suggester, for giving me an excellent excuse to move a song out of that unwieldy playlist. They also directed me towards a fan cam from Music Bank  for this song and mentioned that it was the reason they got into the group at all, so I'm excited to see what this fan-inducing fan cam was. You can get some incredible shots on fan cams, and I love them because they're usually the raw audio that's been unaltered by the program or agency to make the groups sound better. So, EXID is a 2012 group, which I'm very delighted for obvious reasons. They sit between B.A.P and NU'EST in age, being a February debut as well as my apparently preferred debut year of 2012. I like this. I also really like their logo because unless...
