Song Review:: izx!: WAVY- WAVY {Debut}
- Release date: 2024 October 23
- Album tracklist: WAVY, remember you
- Album runtime: 7 minutes
A project group debuted! And one of the members I recognize! Prince from GHOST9! This explains why he's been so quiet on social media the last little bit and why I haven't seen him making random food in the practice room behind his manager's back!
But, the problem is that even if I like them a lot, that maknae is only fifteen, and he's significantly.youmger than the rest of the group, who are all in their twenties. Alas.
Audience participation snapping!! I don't have a lot to say about the instrumentals. I appreciate the piano and the "island" sound through the chorus, but in general they're pretty unremarkable behind the vocals. This isn't a bad thing, as far as I'm concerned. Yes, I really like to have instrumentals that I want to listen to on their own, but if given the choice between strong instrumentals and strong vocals, I'm going to pick the vocals every time. I really do like the parts where the instrumentals are only the quiet piano because I like the balance there between tone, energy, and vibe, but they are there to support the vocals and stay out of their way and that's exactly what they do. They fulfill their role quite well.
I'd bet that one of the members is a rapper who is currently singing for this song. He has the distinct rapper rasp that I'm noticing is a defining trait to most of the rappers in idol groups when they sing. They're a little breathy in places, but they're not that way through the entire song. Which means they're breathy on purpose for a specific effect at certain points. The ad-libs are very clear-toned, which I appreciate. They're quiet, sure, but the entire song is somewhat subdued, so a big blasting belt at that point would completely overwhelm the rest of the song and upset the balance. I'm actually really pleased with how the song turned out. It's quite lovely. I'm not in love with it, but this is pleasant to the ears, if a little predictable, and if the mains weren't fifteen, I'd be adding it to a regular listening playlist.
I really like the narrative of the music video. Take a chance! Reach for your dreams! It's not too late! It's adorable that they are using just absolutely random objects as microphones, but that also fits. And the transition from regular worker to idol was really cool. The idol section is also the only time we see them doing actual choreography (other than one brief bit in the worker costumes and the ending in the worker costumes). There's a sense of play and joy inherent in the music video, which is something I'm very glad to see.
