Song Review:: Vision@ry Vision (tripleS): Visionary Vision (Performante)- Hit the Floor {Debut} {subunit}

  • Release date: 2024 October 23
  • Album tracklist: Visual Virtue, Hit the Floor, Choom, Eclair, Love Soseol, Atmosphere (VV Ver.), 12 Rings, Vision, Bionic Power, Visionary Vision

  • Album runtime: 25 minutes

 When you have a group as large as tripleS is, you almost by definition need subunits, and today we have the debut of another one, which makes the ninth one if I'm understanding this correctly. Or possibly the eighth one. I just realized that the only reason I know anything about the whole is the number of members they have, which is twenty-four (24). I was going to listen to the song they put out in the spring, the first one with the whole group, but I don't think I ever did. Oh, so the group is kind of what NCT was envisioned to be. Yes? Am I understanding that correctly? And there's going to be another subunit debuting in November? Am I also understanding that correctly? This group has a lot to keep track of. Hats off to fans of the group. I don't have the energy for that, at least not the way I get into groups, so I think if I start listening to them, it's going to be a listening only situation. The number of members for this subunit is twelve, which is still very big, but not as big.

The maknae of the entire group turned fourteen this year. I'm not going to be casually listening to them for a while. I can't even be filled with outrage, though, because I'm a little overwhelmed by the amount of information I just discovered existed on just this one group.

I'm also currently struggling to decide which is more important to me. Because looking at the runtime, that averages out to barely two and a half minutes per song (and it was rounded up). And I don't like that, though I do recognize that two of the songs on there aren't even a minute long. But on the other hand, this is a second studio album released this year by the group as a whole, and I really like that. This is a bit of a pickle. Oh, well. I suppose it doesn't matter in the grand scheme until the maknae is an adult, and by then, there may be a new maknae.

There is a lot going on in this song in the first ten seconds. They're not wasting any time, are they? The instrumentals sound very much in line with the concept of "urban". I like the switch up with the refrain and the pre-chorus. It gives me enough texture to think "Oh, this is new," before we get back to the business at hand with the chorus. I also think I might be hearing a sampled song in there because I recognize that screech, but I cannot currently place it. There's a section in there where the instrumentals become nearly non-existent, but it's not something I initially noticed, despite focusing on them, until they started becoming active again. The song also reminds me of OoWee by Nowadays.

There is a lot about this song that reminds me of xikers. The vocalists in Vision@ary Vision also don't get nearly as much screen time as their rapping counterparts, metaphorically speaking. I haven't watched the music video yet and because I don't know any of them by name, I'm not sure I'd be able to know if one did actually get more screen time. I struggle with faces, anyway, and have tricks to help me when I'm getting to know a new group, but I need to at least start with one or two members to be able to tell the others apart, and I'm not going to for the time being. This also isn't the kind of song that typically has a lot of singing to it in the first place, so I'm not faulting the group for that. It simply means that, like with xikers, I wouldn't necessarily want to listen to the group until I see them perform, which won't happen for years. But the rapping is good, and what little we hear of the vocals is also good. There's a good dichotomy of sound between the rappers and the vocalists in terms of range, but the balance feels off. If they end up being a rap-majority sub-unit, more power to them though. I'm not going to complain because I still have a playlist for songs like that.

Yeah, even in the music video, they vibe like a female version of xikers. I hope for their managers' sakes that they're slightly milder. I actually really like the choreography that we see here. It matches the song really well and there's an excellent swagger to it that I'm inclined to believe, which doesn't always happen. The costumes are cool, showing off the hip side, the comfy side, and femme power side to the group. I'm actually reminded of Moonbyul's Is This Love?, which will likely end up being one of my favorite songs of the year, and if they were older, I'd be very curious to see what their performances are like. Excellent use of the color inversion, by the way. It's weird, and I like it, which is a shame.
