Song Review:: BADVILLAIN: ZOOM
- Release date: 2024 November 19
- Album tracklist: ZOOM
- Album runtime: 3 minutes
I didn't pay attention to the group when they debuted because I was busy with one of the groups I already listen to. I want to say it was ATEEZ, which makes it hilarious that once again, ATEEZ is dropping an album shortly before BADVILLAIN dropped a single. It's simply the timing. Doesn't make it any less funny. And, I was expecting the maknae to be younger (can't imagine why I'd think that), but she turned eighteen shortly after debut, which is a nice change of pace.
The run time is rounded up. And this is a weird nitpick, but I really like the album artwork for the first two singles. This one feels less creative, and that little stomping heart with the horns and a devil tail is flipping adorable.
I'm going to give myself a little bit of a pat on the back because I figured out which Stray Kids song those instrumentals remind me of on my own despite Stray Kids not being one of the groups I listen to extensively (I Like It can be pried out of my cold dead hands, and I will die on that hill): LALALALA. If I'm right, and I'm pretty sure I am, I'd imagine that there should be some crossover between the two fandoms on this one. I'm not as enthused, as it feels familiar without being specific, but then that makes it more generic. Generic, when I say it, is not a bad thing, and I use it as a compliment nearly every time. It simply means a good representative of the genre. I'm not as familiar with the genre in general, but the sound is good.
If I look at the lyrics and I see that the song is posturing from a six month old group, I'm going to be disappointed. Well, I looked them up. Honestly, they could be worse. There's a little bit of posturing, but mostly it's a lot of repetition of the sort that makes me wonder why those were the words that were chosen by the writers to be so repetitive. The members might have good voices behind this style of music, and I'm curious to see what they could with something more rock than hip-hop.
While the lyrics don't have as many posturing details, the music video is full of them. I'm a big fan of the choreography, and I'm laughing a little over the fact that they feet like they should be a dark group, but they're in pastels and pretty colors. Honestly, I love that for them. The music video isn't quite as strong with the storyline, but it does look really good, and I think their little bat wings are just precious.
