Before I plunge into the laundry list of recent debuts because the amount panicked me for a moment, I'm going to do a March release to help fill that list out a little bit better and to ease me into the laundry list. Who better than Wendy to avoid doing the one that I'm most aware released last March? Plus, it's been eight-and-a-half months since this released. Also, the demon child (my cat named T'Challa who has intensely strong opinions about K-Pop and has both an ult group and a bias within that group, and yes, it's weird for me too) has settled into my lap because he's cold while I write this, so I'll have to let him take a listen. He's got surprisingly good taste. I don't know that I've ever had him listen to Red Velvet in either solo or group form, so I'm a little curious to see how he responds.
The opening of the song makes it sound a lot more rock than the rest of the instrumentals turn out to be. It's a little bit of a gritty opening, before it opens up into funk and audience participation snapping. Love the audience participation snapping every time it shows up in a song. It's a very bright and cheery sound, with a softer pre-chorus that is well suited to allow the listener to settle into the song before returning. I also appreciate the quick little squeals of electric guitar that pop in with flare to flavor the song. It's very nice.
This is one of my favorite genres of song: bright and cheery while cursing someone. Very Goodbye Earl, which is one of my favorite songs. Wish You Hell is a cute song. For some reason, her tone here really reminds me of Joshua of Seventeen. Also, when she goes a little lower? It's almost sultry and provides an excellent contrast between this and the higher, cute boppy sound.
T'Challa did not like the first two seconds of His Car Isn't Yours, and he immediately got down. Which is a shame because I think he'd like the rest of the song. But Wish You Hell gets the T'Challa stamp of approval. He laid through the entire thing. He didn't love it, but it was a promising response.
I'm getting a very Wednesday Addams vibe coming off the start of the music video, which persists through the rest of it. I'm entertained by the comments and the number of people who went to it after the Jin collaboration. Whoever her stylist and costumer are did an amazing job. She looks stunning and so comfortable with the song. I also appreciate the Alice and Wonderland vibes to it. This is a good music video, with a strong and central message about loving yourself and shedding the expectations of others.
