Song Review:: KARD- Detox

  • Release date: 2024 December 17
  • Album tracklist: Detox, Detox (Inst.)
  • Album runtime: 6 minutes

 As common as co-ed groups were back in earlier generations, that seems to have fallen by the wayside, which is why I'm so fond of KARD on principle, even if they aren't a group I listen to much. They're also a genuinely funny group if you're interested in more than their music.

Detox has a soft, mellowness to the instrumentals. The log drum that's used gives the song a floaty quality while also grounding it. Honestly, if I couldn't go to sleep to just about anything, this would absolutely be going into a sleepytime playlist. It's rhythmic and hypnotic, without large variations in the energy levels or pacing. Normally, that irritates me, but honestly, this is at the perfect tempo, and good news for those who do have to use specific music to sleep to. KARD included the instrumental. So there you go.

The song starts with the girls singing, and even with the dreamy vibe to the instrumentals, their voices sound well-supported, which creates a lovely contrast. It's like they took the breathy vocals sound and did that without making their voices sound like they'll float off and scatter on the wind. The boys rapping provides an even stronger contrast with the instrumentals. I don't necessarily know that the altered parts of the vocals are entirely necessary, but without them, the song would be a lot shorter and it's already just under three minutes. It doesn't feel like it though. Somehow the voices do a really good job of being the mode of transportation into a liminal space where time has no meaning. This is just a good, healthy song about healing from whatever bad relationship is going on. I think the lyrics might be almost all in English too.

The music video, such as it is, is simplicity at its finest. The white outfits and the white background both do an excellent job of giving an almost heavenly air to the song, which goes well with the idea of loving yourself enough to actually love yourself. That sounds obvious, but it's not an easy thing. Also, they're gorgeous, and their stylists did a really good job.
