I wondered why I recognized this name, and it was going to drive me nuts, so I went sniffing. He was one of the vocal coaches for Boys Planet and Make Mate 1! I knew I recognized that stage name! I also don't know that I've ever heard him sing before, but apparently he was part of two different boy groups, and then did a bunch of covers and now he's doing all of this. So theoretically, he should have a great voice.
Wow, this song is long.
I see his name on the credits as a composer, and this is a glorious soft rock ballad. The combination of the electric guitar and the strings produces a very high, very powerful sound, and I am a little bit worried about them overpowering his voice since I am obviously listening to the instrumental track first as it's available. I appreciate this. Once the drums get added, the piano fades into the background as a supporting feature rather than as a leading man, until the very end, when it's just the piano and the guitar again, and whatever has been done to the piano has given it a tone almost like a guitar itself. It's a very cool, hollow sound. Fun fact, the BPM is a little high for these purposes, but I think you could potentially waltz to it as I'm almost positive it's in a 3/4 time signature. It sounds like it should be slower, but actually catching the beats at the beginning, it moves at a pretty steady clip. And when I say it's a little fast, it's about fifty BPM faster than the speed you need to do CPR on someone.
Okay, yes. This dude has a beautiful voice. I really probably shouldn't call him dude, given that I don't know him, and he is older than me. Wow. Actually he just has an incredible voice. I know there are people out there who don't like ballads, and that's fine. Personal preference and all that. But I hope those people will also agree that the part where he's having a duet with himself is at least nice. That duet with himself is absolutely gorgeous. I do worry that the song might be a little out of his range, given the amount of falsetto he has to pop into. There's nothing wrong with using your falsetto if you're hitting the correct notes, but I've also seen enough of the survival shows to know that apparently having to go up into the falsetto is a no-no, even if I'd rather them hit the correct note. I don't understand it. His falsetto is gorgeous and he uses when he clearly needs to, but the song might still be a little high for him.
Just a man and his piano in an open field as the suns sinks toward the horizon. Simple. Beautiful. Majestic. This is an epic love song, with the camerawork providing a strengthening of that feeling. Weirdly, I'm reminded of Aragorn and Arwen from Lord of the Rings, which I could fully believe this was an OST for something like that. The way the music video is set up practically screams epic, muddy, hopeless battles interspersed with these already done scenes and the quiet scenes of what life was like before whatever war is happening. Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again, this song is so long that only something on the kind of scale of Ride of the Rohirrim or Battle of Helms Deep or the Battle of Pelennor Fields could match what this song and this music video are throwing down.
