Grim Reaper Boy is back with a new album! (I call him this because this was the nickname I gave him on Build Up, because of his team's nickname for their performance of Pray) I love the remake he put out recently and have been sitting anxiously waiting for this release to drop.
Great run time. Huge fan of that.
We've got a mellow R&B song going on that softens into full ballad territory occasionally, which is the general sound I have associated with him. The piano is beautiful. We've got some absolutely gorgeous strings. And frankly, the percussion is so well-bonded to the other instruments that often it fades into the background and just acts as a support rather than a defining feature of the instrumentals. The guitar that quietly bolsters his voice pops up occasionally, not enough to take any of the spotlight, but enough that it can just be part of the wall of sound, or the only other sound beyond the percussion.
This guy has such a clear voice, and either he spends his life up in his falsetto, or he just has an incredibly high range. Either way, it's an incredibly lovely and soft effect for this song. Also, his vibrato gives me life, as one might expect me to say. It's not a blasting sort of vibrato, but given that I think he let it go to show up where it would, it gives the song a quavering sort of desperation.
I did this review thinking it was the title track. It was not, but you can see where my confusion was based on the tracklist. If it gets a music video, I'll update this. In the meantime, I really, really like this song and want to share it. Or, I may turn it into a proper BBS post later too. It just depends.
