Song Review:: KickFlip: Flip It, Kick It- Umm Great {Pre-Debut}
Well, friends, as this is a new debut (or near enough), I need to take a look at the ages and verify that what I heard was correct. And it was! The maknae, Donghyeon, turns eighteen in a couple of months, so if I like the sound, I can like the group. Four of the seven were contestants on Loud, which also produced TNX (THE NEW SIX) back in 2021, including the maknae, so I'm honestly grateful that they took so long to debut because Donghyeon would have have been fourteen. Three more years of training? I have tentatively high hopes for the group, as well as the fact that a lot of other people (including my Stay friend whose judgement I trust) are talking about this song. She actually brought the song up just as I was sitting down to write this after I finished reading my book. They'll be officially debuting later this month on the 20th. So, let's see what the buzz is about. I'll add the info when the debut happens, and I link everything.
The runtime. Why.
Ooh, we've got the industrial, metal clanging going on. The sound of the instrumentals for the song are fairly similar to what I imagine the child of NCT 127 and Stray Kids would sound like, which does make sense considering whose younger brothers these are. (Also, given that, it warms my heart to see so many Stays in the comments of the music video, as well as other JYP fandoms (including Hottest belonging to the oldest group still at JYP, 2PM)). The instrumentals also kind of remind me a little bit of when I was younger and I got my first keyboard and I would just mess around with the pre-sets, but incredibly deliberate at the same time. I don't know how to describe it. The song doesn't sound like it was made by someone who doesn't know what they're doing, but it still has the vibes. If that's what they were going for, that is masterful, and it's almost annoyingly catchy.
It's likely just my ears being weird, but when they're saying "응 그래", it kind of sounds like the word "ingrate," which is kind of funny. Also, whoever starts this thing off? That is a deeper voice than I am used to hearing, and I am here for that. I'm also here for the vocal run because that is gorgeous. But this song is not long enough to allow for the repetition of "응 그래" like is present in the song. As much as I initially liked it, it takes up too much of the song's percentage to be overly comfortable, even though it very much matches the instrumentals. Also, two of the members have writing credits. And I like that.
Okay. They're kind of adorable. This is very much a no frills kind of music video, but they look comfy, and they're obviously a bit goofy. I'd count this almost more of a teaser than a music video proper.
