Song Review:: Minnie ((G)I-dle): HER- HER {Debut}

  • Release date: 2025 January 21

  • Album tracklist: Blind Eyes Red, HER, Drive U Crazy, Cherry Sky, Valentine's Dream, It's Okay, Obsession

  • Album runtime: 22 minutes

 Ah, so this is why Blind Eyes Red didn't get its own release. Still a little confused on that front as I don't understand the reasoning, but I'm willing to overlook it because it wasn't just released into the wind. I apparently need to fix my algorithms to get things back to where they were a few months ago so I'm more aware of when things are pre-releases or not. My apologies, CUBE. In other news, I'm pretty excited for this, so I'll be updating that post with the album info at the top here when I'm finished and then we can be on our way (also, apparently the video got very misplaced there somehow, so that's fixed now too). And I'm not a fan of the title track runtime, but the average of the album is okay. It's at least a three minute average.

And already looking at some of the stream numbers, I predict this getting at least two wins.

I'm reminded a little bit of the 70s in this song, but most of the instrumental track is dedicated to staying out of the way of the vocals and just quietly supporting from the back. It makes for a very quiet song that doesn't seem to try to stand out excessively and seems to be here for the vibes. It's soft. It's breezy. It's a lot like cotton candy. I feel like this song would have really benefitted from a throbbing bass to ground, strengthen, and emphasize the swaggy sass to the song.

I love anthems and bold statements about independence and all of that. They're probably my second favorite genre of lyrics behind the narratives, and when I can get both in one place, I'm a happy clam. This doesn't give me the narrative I'm always looking for, which is fine, and lyrically, it's more of an anthem, but the melody doesn't have a level of bombast that I want to see in that kind of song. I really want to like this song because I don't remember which song it is, but either Avril Lavigne or Kesha has a song about "You can try to put me down, but I can't hear you over my platinum albums." I'm sure it's in a playlist I've got, but right now, the caffeine hasn't been introduced so my ability to focus on anything is garbage and we're lucky I was able to focus on this song, so I don't dare go digging into my playlists because I will get distracted and then this will take forever to write. This song has the vibes of that song, but in a heavily desaturated form. There are some versions of this kind of song that don't require big, bold statements with the melody because of the sheer confidence that is inarguable.

The music video is kind of the epitome of alter egos, which is fantastic. Love that for it. I love the interactions between the different versions of her, the different attitudes, and it really just is a fun time. I hope she had a lot of fun filming this as well. It looks like this would have been a really fun time. I think my favorite version was the one with her hair down in the red dress. The absolute disdain on her face when the pink-silk-wearing one was prancing about on the table makes me giggle. A very close second is the one with the long ponytail. But the music video does a really good job of improving on the audio track because of Minnie's acting.
