Song Review:: Wheein (MAMAMOO): Aftertaste

 Wheein just casually slid a single towards us, and I love that for her. She's probably the member of MAMAMOO that I'm least familiar with, but that just means that there hasn't been good timing for me to get to know her. And this also comes with the instrumental, which makes her my favorite right now. But even if I don't know her as well as some of the other members, she's in MAMAMOO and that tells me everything I need to know about her voice.

Wheein dropped a song that belongs in a fairytale. I'm not even kidding. I'm reminded somewhat of Pinocchio and Cinderella, without anything substantial to explain why I'm connecting those two to this song, but also, this is both soft and sweet, with just a bit of a bite occasionally from the cymbals and the guitar. But we get strings, which are one of my favorite things to be added to music because they create such a cinematic depth to a song. I have absolutely no idea what the song is about, but from the instrumentals, I'm feeling like this is a "You're not alone" song. It's definitely about song of some variety but I'm not sure about the specifics. At least, not yet.

I was wondering which member would be the one to have this timbre. Much like the instrumentals, When's voice is soft and sweet, even when she dips up into belting range. Oh, and her vibrato is gorgeous. My obsession with vibratos continues and likely will not abate, but this song needs the vibrato, otherwise it wouldn't sound nearly as beautiful and soaring. 

She's so pretty. It's another duh because she's in MAMAMOO, but wow. Her stylists need a raise for this MV, which is less an MV and more some sort of special video, but still. Wow.

2025 Music Show Recap

 And that's it, folks! That's a full year of the music show wins! Which means it's now time for the recap and data analysis! Delicious, delicious data. Now this is on the assumption that I counted correctly. I did double check my numbers to make sure, but I could have had a mental blip somewhere at the exact same time or skipped something twice. It's possible. I am however about 97.35% positive that I have correct numbers in the raw data and that I did the math correctly before dumping it into the spreadsheet for chart creation. Because I like charts and numbers. Not enough to take any math classes in college, but enough that I've always done well in and enjoyed math. First of all, the title track? I think that's actually a password, and I love that. I also am wholly in love with the song title "Delulu Solulu". Plus, this feels like an important note, we've had a new member added to the group since the last time I wrote something for this group, and  she is not a minor.  Whichever LOVE sent this in and specifically requested I time this release to come out when Minhyun gets out, I love you. GUESS WHAT EVERYONE! MINHYUN HAS BEEN DISCHARGED. I try to avoid the caps lock, but I'm honestly so happy I could cry.  Thank You (Evening by Evening) is the fourth track from their fifth mini album, Canvas, which sold a grand total of 10 first day units and was released in 2016. I'll let that sink in for a second. The things you learn, and honestly, I couldn't be prouder of their survival with that little factoid.  I wanted my last "normal" (ish) post of the year to be a Battle of the B-Sides, before I start hitting the December wrap-up and the year recap hard, to be appropriate for going into the new year. There were a couple of things I was thinking about for it. For my last Greatest Hits of 2025, I did a big hitter in the form of IVE from The Form and that had me thinking about this last post. Do I do one of my top three groups? Do I do an old group? Do I match it in energy? Do I soften it a bit? Higher energy? Do I do a more obscure group or do I do one of the big hitters?  I decided to have my first one of these for 2026 be something upbeat.  Plus, considering they had their tenth anniversary last year and I didn’t do anything for them then (because that was during my lean months), I figure that this would be a good one to go with now. I’m pretty sure that this isn’t one of their softer songs, but I like the idea of starting off the year with a song called “Beautiful” anyway because it taps into the romantic and sentimental bit of my soul that attaches like a barnacle to some of these groups. So, this is the title track, and second track, for their first album, The Clan Pt. 2.5: The Final Chapter, which was released in 2017, and what do you mean it was produced by someone whose stage name is Star Wars?  I was so busy this month. Y'all. I didn't do a ton of the reviews, which is coming back to bite me in the butt now that I'm trying to get my year end post worked on. It's fine. Past Fangirl hates Future Fangirl, and it's completely fine.  July debuts! I only did a single review for a debut group this month, and it was for AHOF , who has been doing quite well for a rookie group. I may get 1verse reviewed because I still feel guilty about not reviewing them. Debuts I didn't cover: CrazAngel (girl group), Tomatomat (girl group), 1verse (boy group), 4X4 (girl group) and SEVENTOEIGHT  (boy group).   Big Ocean JJ (subunit of Big Ocean) also debuted.  I got this a bit ago as a suggestion, but I just kept putting it on hold. However, considering Taeyong is now discharged (and I get to pull his photocard off my Enlistment Wall now yay ), I'm going to dust this one off and do it. I would have had this out for his discharge but I lost track of when he was getting discharged. Sorry. I am also slightly afraid of this song because I haven't heard it and whoever submitted it wrote "enjoy the lyrics ;)" and I can't decide which is likelier: if this is going to have lyrics like Smoothie or if it has lyrics that I am definitely going to mishear and make them worse than they are, because a comment like that could go either way.
