Song Review:: ZEROBASEONE: Doctor! Doctor!
- Release date: 2025 January 20/ February
- Album tracklist: Doctor! Doctor!
- Album runtime: 2 minutes
Pre-release, is it? Okay, ZEROBASEONE, I see you. I do tend to like their music, so I do have tentatively high hopes for this upcoming album as well. But, we shall see. Also, I'm so thoroughly displeased with this whole "Oh, I'm just going to release two and a half minute songs and the fans will be fine with it" thing going on. To be clear, not directed at the members because I doubt they have much if any control over how long their songs are. I'm directing that more towards the company for picking the song, and the songwriters for writing it. If nothing else, then because when purchasing the albums, the consumer pays more per minute on albums with shorter tracks. This song is shorter than the shortest song from their previous mini album (Eternity), but that one wasn't a promoted single.
So I'm a super fan of the old, gospel-style music to start off. I'm not necessarily sure that that's an organ, but the vibes are there all the same. Also, I really like that it's not a one-and-done, but it pops back in later one, which is nice to see. Definitely R&B, with a very easygoing roll through the song. It's chill. It's very chill.
Everything about the vocals here is excellent. The rapping is smooth as steamed milk going into a cup of coffee. There are some fun little vocal quirks for the vocalists that keep the sound from being otherwise too uniform for my taste.
As a side note, the artwork for the single is actually kind of adorable.
The music video is almost twice as long as the song itself.
This music video is giving some real New Mutants vibes. There's a proper storyline of taking a chance on love even when it doesn't make sense, plus that combined with the apparent magic some of them have is very interesting. Some of them clearly have love related magic, but some of them don't. We also get a lot less choreography than is popular right now, which I appreciate, and that with the extended run time makes the music video feels more video than music. Some might dislike that. Me, not so much. The more story I can get, the better.
