Battle of the B-Sides:: S#arp: Secret Seduction

If you've never heard of this group, don't worry. You're not alone in this because they're a first gen group that hasn't released an album since 2003 and they're not one of the names you regularly hear about as being a representative of the first gen line-up. Although, to be fair, even when you do run into one of the big names of first gen, I've found that many people outside of Korea don't know them as well as they should since they're foundational to what we have now. Our second and third gen (and fourth gen now) favorites got to run and be global superstars on the paths that first gen walked down first. You may also have noticed that when it comes to first gen coverage here, I've been focusing on the B-Sides. Part of that is because out of all of the generations of K-Pop that we have so far, first gen has the greatest wealth of b-sides as they were before the mini albums and singles were popularized, so they released full albums. The other pa...

Battle of the B-Sides:: DIVA: Feel it

This song right here is literally older than half of Stray Kids and half of ATEEZ and the entirety of TOMORROW X TOGETHER. We're going back, y'all. Which is funny because there's another first gen song lurking in my roulette wheel that's older than all of BTS except for two. So, for those of you who were born after this group disbanded, and never got the chance to listen to them, and for those of you who came to K-Pop after they disbanded and never got the chance to listen to them, well, now's your chance to discover them! We do have some of the lineup changes that make first gen K-Pop distinct, instead of just the music, but it could have been a lot wilder with those changes. And the group had a few controversies while they were active, but it seems like they and Baby V.O.X are more or less cool with each other now. DIVA debuted in 1997 as a three-member group under Cream Records, possibly. I did look, but I'm getting conflicting information from a couple of ...

Battle of the B-Sides:: Baby V.O.X: Summer Story

Second post of this theme for May! You know, I wish this had a performance I could find. So unfortunately, you're basically just going to get me yapping for this. It's fine though, both because this matches the theme and also because b-sides from first gen are wonderfully plentiful, even if the performances for them are not. Plus, we know that the odds are very good that we're going to get good vocals out of them. There is a group that I know we won't be able to say that about, but when I cover that group, I'll let you know. Like I've said. First generation K-Pop is absolutely wild in a way that is just fascinating to me. This particular group didn't have quite the drama of some of the others, though there was a member who had to leave due to a controversy, and they had a few lineup changes over the years. Baby V.O.X debuted in 1997 as a five-member group under DR Music (which was founded in 1989 and is also known as DR Entertainment, and still has active g...
