The cool thing about how I'm trying to get myself caught up is I'm under 0 obligation to do any of the reviews in order. Takes the pressure off me to do any given review, but also gives me flexibility in case a song gets a win in a music show before I get to actually doing it. Like in this case, where it's part of the March releases that I'm putting a pause on for the moment to wrangle the April ones. Congrats, NiziU! Super exciting! And until or unless this gets added to an album later, I'm just going to treat this like the single it currently is.
This song feels very J-Pop. Like, if you told me that this was the opening theme to an anime, I'd so fully believe you that knowing it isn't makes me feel a little weird, like the world isn't what I expect it to be. It's a very bright track with high amounts of cheerful energy, and quirky little synthy bursts and warbles, which really only adds to the vibes. I'm feeling a science fiction flavored rom com, with some gundam suits, or something like a small robotic dog version of Hawk from Seven Deadly Sins. The alarm clock sounds at the beginning also makes the song instantly identifiable, so that's fun.
There are a couple of instances in the song where it would have been perfect to hear some vibrato, and yet. It's fine. I'm not lamenting this lost opportunity or anything. There are a few sets of notes in the melody where my ears perk up, because as much as I like major keys, and I do, I really like descending scales that use the flats (I also absolutely love minor keys but that's not the point). We get the reverse happening as well, at a later part of the song, which is exciting. Overall, this is a showcase of very stable, steady vocals that are well supported by their breath.
The music video tried to trick me into thinking it was a performance video, but there is a storyline, and it's cute. Also, in trying to express what I found so funny about this music video, my brain very helpfully supplied a version of the Drake meme. And by very helpfully, I mean annoyingly because I refuse to use picture-form memes because while I flirt with the boundaries of professionalism sometimes, I haven't gone that far yet. So, instead, the part that I found the funniest was cute boys ⛔ cute fish ✅. Also, when they realized what they were cutting. That part was pretty funny too.
