Song Review:: Son Ho Young (god): Go Around

  • Release date: 2026 October 14
  • Album tracklist: Go Around, Go Around (Inst.)
  • Album runtime: 6 minutes

If you don't think that I'm going to do a review for a member of god (pronounced "G-O-D") as a soloist, I have not been doing my due diligence in screaming about my love for this group from the rooftops. There are only so many rooftops to scream from, but I will have to rectify this. This song is Son Ho-Young's first solo release in five years, and I am honored to be able to do this for him.

The drums and the guitar don't kick off into the song immediately, which lets the first impression be one of softness. And while we do have very steady energy, the softening that occurs occasionally is going to do really well to either let the vocals rest or to highlight them. We get the instrumental in the single, so I don't have to try to listen under the vocals yet for this part, which is why I can't say that yet, but this is an excellent flow of energy and momentum.

I'm going to say something and I'm not sure how anyone is going to respond to this, but this sounds like the kind of song that Seungmin from Stray Kids would do and sound amazing with. They have a very similar vocal quality, and I'd love to say that this is a surprise, but that's like being surprised that a member of RIIZE sounds like TVXQ! (actually, RIIZE reminds me of SHINee, but for the sake of the metaphor, I'm going with TVXQ!). god was JYP's first boy group, so it's hardly a surprise that another boy group member trained under the same company would sound the same. But the vibrato on this man. I'm also not surprised by this because god is renowned for their vocals and the group is first gen, which is when groups consistently had strong vibratos that were just present instead of us having to wait for the right song to drag it out of them. In this case, it's an omnipresent vibrato. Also, if you notice, there are very few actual slides that he's doing. Most of the note transitions are hitting them like steps, which also means that there are also only occasional bends to the notes. It's fascinating looking at the skill on display with this song.

This is a very chill music video where he's just singing into a mic, but I'm willing to bet that he was actually singing when this was filmed because there are neck tendons on display at a couple of points and his Adam's apple moves. I know this isn't a Greatest Hits post, but I'm pretty sure that it's still valid to look at his neck and say "I think he was singing live when he filmed this and they just didn't put the live vocals in." Which means I want to hear his live vocals for this song. That would be nice to get from him. It's a very nice little music video that's just vibes and visuals. He also looks a little like he could be the cousin of Onew and Kyuhyun over at SME. The comments made me smile though because the group is getting new fans that are younger than I am. Which really just proves their nickname.
