Another group to succumb to the lure of the less than three minute song. Two and a half minutes long. Shame. However, with this year being their seventh anniversary and the name change, there's probably going to be a bit of a shift in equilibrium for the group, so that's fine. I'm willing to be a little more flexible here. Also, if I reversed that so it's song title first, it becomes "Good thing we are idle", which is kind of a clever use of language. Also, I do intend to get to Girlfriend at some point. May need someone to remind me that I want to do that.
The video games vibe that I'm getting off this song are making me laugh a little. It belongs in an action side-scroller, but it needs to be gothic in the literary sense of the word. One that comes to mind is Castlevania, which makes it even cooler, because imagine fighting Dracula to this as the soundtrack. Cool, right? It's fully spooky rock with the combination of the somewhat aggressive beat and the midi instruments layered over the top, which, again, is why my brain goes to Castlevania.
Ignoring the 2NE1 and KARA vibes this song has going on, i-dle belongs to the same circle in a Venn Diagram as BLACKPINK. They really do, especially since they both occupy similar spheres in the mid- to late- third gen kpop. The song is a little lower in the female register, which lets them be so incredibly well-supported and not breathy (and also makes it a bit easier for me to sing, so that's nice). It's just way too short.
The music video adds almost half a minute to the song. And that is a lot. It reminds me somewhat of 90s alt rock music videos, where they're fighting against the system, although in this case, it's more fighting each other like it's their day job. Hilarious, by the way. Reminds me of certain 80s pop icon rivalries. Then there's also the whole "stop hate, spread love" thing, while the members are beating the love out of each other. And can we take a minute to talk about Soyeon's boots? Wow. Those...are a pair of footwear.
