Song Review:: In A Minute: BGM : HOW WE RISE - PLAY- How We Do

  • Release date: 2025 August 25

  • Album tracklist: Press Play, How We Do, 5ive, At Dawn

  • Album runtime: 11 minutes

These guys were not on my radar for a new release, at all. But, thankfully, YouTube's algorithm has my back. And you know the best part of this? Even if it's only four songs, this is their first mini album! Whoo! The runtime is abysmal and I'm looking at the title track specifically in horror, but while I'd like to say something positive about this, not a single song is over three minutes. It's so unnecessary, you know? But I am diligent with this group because they need love and I really like them.

Going into this, if you were to tell me that the two-and-a-half minute song had a dance break, I would have laughed in your face. Across the board, the song could benefit from about another minute in length, so keep that in mind as true for both instrumentals and vocals because I don't want to repeat myself, and I'm not going to. There's a funky groove to the song that invites you to move with the song, transitions from the slightly stronger to matching where the vocals are softer. The dance break is surprisingly hip-hop, considering the rest of the time, and the fact that it's immediately followed by silence for soft riffs is quite delightful for those of us who are me.

One of the things I like best about this group is that the company isn't afraid of letting the vocalists be vocalists. We've got some actually pretty delightful vocal gymnastics and layering. The group isn't that big, which makes it all the more surprising because they don't need to, but especially with that ending after the dance break which has at least two members going at the same time, it's something I look for because groups should harmonize more. There's also a call and response earlier during what I'm pretty sure is the chorus, which delights me. And actually sung chorus? Yes, please. Be still, my soul. This is why I like older, more experienced idols. This right here.

Ah, they're so settled. Lovely. It's really more of a performance video than it is a music video, but that's fine. Music videos are expensive and this shows off the choreography, which is so chill and a little swaggy. And the dance break? Nice. I'm curious about some things, so I may go watch a music show to see if those questions get answered.
