Song Review:: Jinny (Secret Number): Towards the Light- Everglow {Debut}

  • Release date: 2025 September 8

  • Album tracklist: Everglow, LIGHTS, BABY BABY, HIGHER

  • Album runtime: 13 minutes

 Okay. Well. It appears that this may be the title track? I think? This may also be both her solo debut and her English debut, so that's interesting and exciting for her! I wish her a long and successful career! And I know I just did a review of Secret Number's newest song, but she is a former member who left the group, not an active member, so these are slightly unrelated.

It's been a minute since I've said a song was similar to a Disney Channel song, but this one is. The beginning is a little bit more techno than that sound usually is, but it does provide a decent, related contrast to the rest of the song, which is very much rock. There's actually a really good build of energy and progression through the song, with a cute, cheeky little soften to it as a lead-in to the second verse, but the variation through the majority of the song is surprisingly high, and I like that. as expected.

Tell me that this isn't Hilary Duff, Vanessa Hudgens era Disney Channel star music. I'm actually really impressed with the blend of rap and singing that she's got going on in this song. Granted, I have no idea what her position was while in Secret Number, so if she was a rapper, she's supporting JR's statement that idol rappers have to be able to sing as well, but if she's a vocalist, she's showing off a really good range of abilities, especially since her tone between the rapping and the vocals is so different. Like, with Moonbyul, when she sings, you can hear the rapper in her voice, in the way she sings. The same with Minhyuk. Either way, it's a pleasant surprise for me and an intriguing one. But! As this is a debut, I have very high expectations of showcasing range and ability, so all that's missing for this song is dancing ability, something that may be fixed when I watch the music video. So far, I think this is a good debut and seems to be a solid representation of what she can do.

Those are nails to kill a man with. Daggers. Goodness. There's an interesting mix of black-and-white and almost hyper-saturation of color. Could the one dress be more early 00s styled though? I could swear I saw celebrities wearing something like it back in the day. I actually love the progression in the storyline, which is soft and shown well. There's a little bit of choreography, not a lot, but whether that's part of the song or representative of her past debuting with Secret Number, I'm not sure.
