I don’t usually touch the remixes, but I figure that since one came out today, I’d take the opportunity to cover the original since I haven’t done that yet and I generally like ITZY. I worry about getting too invested in them because girl groups I like don’t seem to do too well. Disbandments. Hiatuses. It’s not good, and I don’t like it because I want to like more girl groups. Not that there aren’t hundreds of already disbanded ones I could get into, but I want some that I can actively support, you know? Funny thing about that run time, if you remove the first track, which only clocks in at around a minute-and-a-half, the average runtime goes up to three minutes.
The instrumental is fairly uncomplicated, but very strongly afrobeats. I'm not sure if it's fully within the genre, but it's at minimum afrobeats-flavored. This is going to have some very good choreography with it. I’m calling it now. The good news is that this has got a little bit of variation with various sound effects to allow the song to shift and vary with the different sections of the song.
There’s a lot of repetition vocally. The chorus is fine, but the post-chorus just makes me check out. It's strong enough that it's what I hear the most because the rest of the song doesn't try to step out of its orbit. This isn't a song that I necessarily want to leave on repeat, and I'm going to have to stop listening to it here pretty soon because I've had it on repeat for too long for this. But, that being said, I might add this to my pre-work playlist specifically.
What a music video. The details. I can't decide exactly what kind of being they're supposed to be, but I kind of feel like they're a destructive sort. You know the superheroes from the Reckoners series? They're books. This kind of feels like that kind of superhero. (Side note, highly recommend those books. They were the ones that got me back into reading after college and having no time for reading because all I was doing was reading and writing.) I was also right about the choreography being very good. But whatever is going on, the city seems to kind of be falling apart around them. Which is cool. I like that.
