Song Review:: NEWBEAT: LOUDER THAN EVER- Look So Good

 I still need to do Cappuccino. Well. Okay. Speaking of rookie boy groups that I adore to pieces, NEWBEAT is coming to us with an album that would have done well being titled something in reference to how short all the songs are. Only one of the four is over three minutes, and that's barely, and of the remaining three, two of those are under two-and-a-half minutes. Yeah, I'm super happy about this. Still. Looking forward to this still because I like these guys, and I love how comfortable they are in front of a crowd already. 

I love it when you can hear echoes of older groups in the younger ones. More on that with the vocals, but this is a very clean instrumental that is very much in the support chamber. The beat is strong and reliable, almost too heavy, but there are fun little melodies going on with the bass guitar to lighten the song a little, which is also probably a breath of fresh air for the guitarist. We’ve also got a lot for the return of the audience participation clapping, which delights me. I love it when it shows up. There are a couple of spots where the instrumental seems to shift into something that is very close to a capella to really let the vocals shine. 

Y’all, Minseok sounds so much like Junhee, it’s not even funny. He’s going to be lethal in a few years. You heard it here first, folks. Yunhu too has that same fabulous crackle in his voice and I just have to nod at Beat Interactive for finding more of this style of voice. Love that. Moving on, the first part of the chorus is painfully repetitious, and I’m not a fan of it, except for that last chorus when we’ve got ad-libs going through the song and changing how the chorus sits. That I appreciate. Now, that being said, one of my favorite genres of K-Pop songs (and songs in general), especially from the boy groups, is “I’m down so bad for you”. It’s the helpless simping. I love that. 

So this is more of a performance video than a music video, which is fine. Honestly after the bonkers music videos we got at debut, it’s a nice variation to have something a little simpler. And, my word, the choreography. That is some sharp choreography right there. I’m in love with the leather jackets and the 90s aesthetic with the denim-on-denim. We’ve also got crop tops and bare shoulders and tight pants. So, if those things are something that you are interested in, I’m going to quietly recommend this video to you. Also the song is phenomenal, but the visuals are pleasing.

Halloween Spookening: 2025 Edition

 It's the most wonderful time of the year!  I'm back with a new selection of Halloween themed or generally spooky songs for you all! Have I spent the year looking for new songs for my playlist? Yes.  Unless I do The Roulette Wheel, I obviously can pick which of the suggestions I've gotten that I'll write posts for. I also have a spreadsheet where I have my posts organized by generation and boy group, girl group, and co-ed. The co-ed groups definitely need more attention, but I'm taking these last few Specialty posts to focus on the girl groups because they're not my natural inclination, and while the Roulette Wheel is weighted equally, I don't like that it's uneven. So, I ignored my normal addition of the B/G/Co-Ed Wheel spin and just did it for a girl group, and I ended up with LABOUM. I've got a lot of affection for him and his group because of Dive Studios (as well as the fact that they're one of the few co-ed groups currently active right now), and even though I have a strong suspicion this is not going to be a preferred genre for me, I'm still excited for this. However. There isn't a single song at three minutes and most of them are closer to two-and-a-half minutes. I imagine that if I listen to this on repeat for too long, then the police and/or referee whistle will become a little grating. Song Review:: Chanyeol (EXO): Upside Down - Happy Accident {Pre-Release}

Sole) , 123 Dance  Album runtime: 18 minutes  Yes, the album is already out, but I wanted to get to this one first because if he gets a win for the album, a win on this one will likely come first. Also, I thought the present he got from Kai, I think, was so sweet. I love that. Wholesome support from the members. Ooh, that's some smooth and swanky R&B. That's actually really nice. It's slow and mellow, but it's not flimsy. The beat is really pronounced, though unhurried. This is an early Sunday morning kind of song, or perhaps a Tuesday night kind of song. Slow dancing in the kitchen to a song only the two of you can hear. Music Show Wins:: Week of 10/15 - 10/21

  With Chuseok well and truly over for the year, we have all the music shows giving us first place winners on their charts! This hasn't happened in over a month! Also, now that triple crowns have been won, I got to share other performances from other groups! We've got four  first song wins, and one of those is a first time win for the group as a whole! Yay! Baksu! And even though those aren't recent performances for the two IVE wins, I shared them anyway because I like having a full set of performances. Also, with After School Club still on hiatus as far as I know, I decided to give y'all a group I've started listening to more because they've got some nice Halloween-y songs: episode 537 with TRI.BE! They spend a lot of time dancing, and not just to their own songs. This was a fun episode. Not that most of them aren't fun, but the vibes are with this group. Song Review:: VANNER: Goodbye & Hello- Goodbye & Hello

Could simply be the time of year combined with the title, but I also don't like the implication right now. Not for these guys. Also, weekends are a great time right now for me to hit some of my backlog, and while I know this is a relatively older song, I really like VANNER and want to make sure that I give them the attention they deserve. Even if it's late. Also, Junny is on the credits as composer and lyricist, so that's super exciting. This is a pretty soft and chill song. I just want you all to know this. The beat is actually pretty slow and when more volume is wanted, more instruments are added rather than an increase in the dynamics. Song Review:: Daesung (BIGBANG): Falling Slowly

I'm writing this before the frantic rush of the next few days in terms of releases, because competition there will be fierce. And also to start to pad out the March releases because somebody had to get a win on a music show months later. I joke. I'm actually very happy for them. And I picked this one because I scrolled randomly, and his was the one my cursor was on when I stopped. I feel like Daesung needs very little introduction. He is the maknae of BIGBANG after all.  The instrumentals for this song are absolutely gorgeous with a lovely acoustic guitar that gets to spend time at the front of the song, before it hands over the reigns to an electric for very strategic sections. Because I'm late on doing this, but it seems that I don't want to finish the September review without having done this one first. I think I could probably really like this group if I spent more time with them, but then we run the risk of what happens to girl groups when I really like them. I seriously have the worst luck, but unfortunately, I adored Steal Heart .  Ooh, that guitar is fun. The energy is good to keep the song going without it straying too close to being active. What I will say is that sudden energy drop was highly unexpected, especially because the song felt like it was going the route of consistency. Steady beat, a little bit of the grungy guitar, largely non-distracting to support the vocals. As I can't tell that there's a discernable actual title track from this album beyond what I've already covered, I'm just going to pick my favorite track of the bunch to review. It's been bothering me that I haven't done one when I was so diligent with the tracks with the music videos. This album is a massive undertaking, and I genuinely don't know which ones are new songs and which are old. But I know at least this one is a b-side because there is absolutely no corresponding music video. Also, what a flex. Twentieth Japanese anniversary. King of Kings, indeed.
