Song Review:: 82MAJOR: SILENCE SYNDROME- TAKEOVER

  • Release date: 2025 April 14
  • Album tracklist: TAKEOVER, Heroes, Passport, Promise You
  • Album runtime: 14 minutes

I would like to apologize to the group because in my filing cabinet for K-Pop in my brain, the quick pull tab sticking out of 82MAJOR's folder is labeled "Keeho's brother Yechan", so every time I need to reference 82MAJOR, it starts with that in my head. Some people have cool mind palaces. Me, I have ugly gray metal filing cabinets arranged in the room like it's a dimly lit spy facility from the 1950s and I don't know what that says about me as a person. Think that scene from Avengers: Endgame and you'll have a pretty good approximation, but the filing cabinets move on me sometimes. And yes, I know there's a more recent release, but it's on my list. This one was just older.

Also, 82MAJOR has a live practice version of the song. Don't know if you knew that. I kind of love it.

That's an opening. Actually, the entire instrumental almost is deeply unsettling and reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock, which is cool because I love Alfred Hitchcock, but at the same time that's not really something that I would have expected in a K-Pop song, you know? Those are chords I was not expecting and they're very discordant. There's essentially only one section, which does show up twice, where the instrumental is not stressing me out, but other than that, it's a little hair-raising.

This song is PJ approved™, which is really kind of funny. Reminder that this is the cat who really likes Stray Kids, early BTS, and specifically J-Hope. This is not my ballad-loving cat. This is the rap-loving one. It makes sense why he'd try to lay on my phone, purr, and start kneading on my blanket. I'm not super happy about the last part, but he really likes rap, and this song has so much of it. Like with the instrumental being a little odd and intense, the vocals have basically only the pre-chorus to do what vocalists do.

That is what we call a storyline. Well done. I'm not overly fond of the storyline itself, mostly due to where I was living and going to school for nine of the first eighteen years of my life and which has made me a touch sensitive to certain things, but I'm also not going to complain too much about it because we got a storyline, and while they're becoming more common again, they're still not common enough. And the choreography looks good, so all in all, not bad.
