Song Review:: Dayoung (WJSN): What's a girl to do- What's a girl to do

  • Release date: 2026 April 07
  • Album tracklist: What's a girl to do, Priceless (kaching kaching)
  • Album runtime: 5 minutes

This album rounds up to five minutes. The title track is barely over two minutes. If I didn't know better, I'd suspect this of being an AI garbage track, the kind that I keep seeing pop up on the older artists.

The instrumental is very nice and constant. There are no surprises, no consequential changes and variations, no focal point, nothing to really sink your teeth into. I don't dislike it. I want to be clear about this. It's perfectly fine. But I only made it through about two repetitions before it turned into background noise because there was nothing to mentally grip onto.

Here's the thing. Even a short story can have a solid plot. I have an entire book of short stories on my college books shelf on my bookshelf. I read most of what was required for my creative writing class. I've written a few short stories myself; the main point of short stories is to maximize the amount you say in the shortest amount of words. I'm not good at that, but I know how to do it. Why do I bring this up? There is no rhythm to the energy of this song. She's got a great voice, and you can hear what it could be if it weren't restricted to a narrow emotional and note band. It's just so frustrating that the songwriters stripped the song of any chance of personality or being able to show off what she could do. And one of them is Eric Nam and I am so very, very disappointed in him. It's nice. It's a very pretty song. But there doesn't feel like there's anything to sink your teeth into, you know?

She still reminds me so much of Jessica Simpson. I love the combo of the unzipped green jacket, jeans, and sports bra though. It's a really good look on her. But this is also basically a performance video.
