Song Review:: In A Minute: UNBOXING: WHAT YOU WANTED- WHAT YOU WANT {Debut}

  • Release date: 2025 March 15

  • Album tracklist: Unbox, WHAT YOU WANT

  • Album runtime: 6 minutes

 After learning that Under 15 is still a thing and being both flabbergasted and nauseated by this, I really, really appreciate that these three are both adults and also experienced idols, all three having been in the project group Tan and two being in a duo together and formerly from another group. Also, the leader of the group was the vocal guide for some BTOB and Pentagon songs, which honestly tells me everything I need to know about the quality of this man's voice. Two of the members, Juntae and Jaejun (who also debuted previously as part of C-Clown back in 2012) are part of the 97z with Chan and Mingyu and Jungkook. The maknae is part of the 00z with Jongho, Seungmin, and Chani. That does mean that Jaejun debuted at the age of fifteen, which isn't okay, but it's been thirteen years and once he hit eighteen, C-Clown's discography opened up for me according to my rules anyway. But! This is exciting! Yay them! Congrats for the new debut! Now, I did have to round that up to six, but the title track is over three minutes, so my bar has been met. Technically.

The solo guitar and the breathing at the beginning is a choice, and you know what makes me happy? We get to hear the guitar layered into a lot of the rest of the song, so it takes that opening choice and threads it in rather than leaving it as a one-and-done situation. Sometimes it's very subtle and I didn't notice it at first, but once I realized it was there, it's easier to pick out. Technically, I think maybe the echoes should belong to vocals, but I'm going to put them here, because I think they're cool.

As expected from both idols who are physically older and this experienced, I'm loving the maturity in their voices. Even when they shift into higher voices, though I don't think any of them fully go into a falsetto, their tones are so very stable the entire time. And because this is a three minute song, we get lots of good ad-libs at the end, and it feels full even though it doesn't rush along like a cheetah with its tail on fire. The other thing I think should be recognized is that this song doesn't spend the majority of its time in the stratosphere. We get some really nice lower notes. It's not super low notes in the basement of the song, because we don't actually get any of those, but it's low enough that there's a contrast when the song goes higher.

I can't tell that there's a music video for the song and it's hard enough to find the audio, which doesn't bode particularly well, but it's early days. Still, I'm tentatively liking this.
