Song Review:: MEOVV: MY EYES OPEN VVIDE- HANDS UP {Pre-Release}

 Congrats on the win! We're on Underage Protocol until Ms. Ella turns 18 in December of 2026! I don't have a lot to say here other than this is part of the April batch I wasn't getting to yet, but it's fine! I'm curious about this song! I like that it's three minutes long! Sorry about the shouting!

There's a distinctly Indian vibe going on here with some of the instruments, which I don't know how SoPoEc approved it is, but I like the sound. The song has a good, quick pace that's quite solid and avoids the current trend of languidity. Reminds me a bit of Bang by After School with the kind of beat way that the . Its method of softening is to remove some of the instrumentals rather than slowing down or changing what you're actually hearing. It's remarkably stable that way. I'm a little annoyed that this has to be under Underage Protocol because I can think of about four of my playlists I'd put this in. 

Vocally, we're leaning towards LOONA or certain second gen groups, one of which yes is 2NE1, so we can in fact see the company legacy on this group. They may not be YG proper, but TheBlackLabel is YG light, so I feel pretty comfortable connecting them to the legends that are the YG groups. And they also have the kinds of vocal sounds that I really like from the girl groups. Well supported even when it isn't necessarily loud or bold. I'm cheating a little bit because I used one of my music video watches to listen for something very specific that I didn't notice on my vocals listen but listened for specifically in the video. In the exact spot where I expected to have some sort of big belt or ad-lib or riff, something along those lines, it feels like the strings got cut from the song with the resulting energy drop, and the song never quite makes up for it at the end, which is a shame because up until that point, the song is vibing.

So the energy drop is meant for a dance break. Understood. Interesting, but I'm not going to complain because it's a dance break and I've been whining about wanting a proper one for months. The music video also goes quite hard with the Indian vibes, so at least it matches there, and honestly, I think this is a really cool music video. I don't understand quite why one of the members was beefing with the child, but it was kind of funny. There's also a storyline. I don't have the mental capacity right now to parse through it and figure out exactly what is going on, because it isn't abundantly clear, but I can sense that there is one. 

Also, I apologize for the amount of slang, but I'm excessively tired and can't be bothered to filter the inside thoughts to typed words too much.

Halloween Spookening: 2024 Edition

 I love Halloween. It's been my favorite holiday for literally my entire life. I have loved Halloween longer than Sangyeon of The Boyz has been alive, barely because my first Halloween was a couple of days before he was born, but according to my mother, even at the age of not-quite one years old, I have loved it. She dressed me up as a San Francisco 49ers cheerleader. I have pictures.  One of the most important things, then, is finding music that matches the Month of Spookening and horror. I love spooky movies. I love spooky books. I love spooky video games (even though I am a wuss of the nth degree and prefer to watch other people play them). And I love spooky music.      Much like a recipe blog, this K-Pop review blog depends on the path leading me to where I am at today to dictate my tastes and how I perceive the world. Unlike a recipe blog, I'm not going to start every review with fifteen pages of backstory to get to the good stuff that you would actually care about.      You'll get the full fifteen (this is a joke, I don't think it's that long) pages up front, so you can decide for yourself if I'm worth listening to. Battle of the B-Sides:: VANNER: WANT U BACK

I know that The Roulette Wheel gave me VANNER to do, but I was genuinely pleased about this because I love this group. They're goofy goombahs with incredible voices. Also, Gon is a day older than SCoups, who is a day older than Minhyun. That's a clump. I was originally going to do Diamonds  or Savior from their first post- Peak Time  mini album, but then as I was listening to VENI VIDI VICI, waffling between the two songs, I realized I should probably do the one that I have in more of my playlists. Thus, WANT U BACK . The entire album is great though. Highly recommended.  Good news, the song has been out long enough that they have done performances of it. And you'll also be getting one of my favorite things: choreography video. Because they released that a few months ago. So they have a pair of rappers in the group.  Let's go back in time a little bit to May of 1998, before a lot of newer idols were born. And by newer, I mean, this song was released about two weeks before SinB of GFriend/VIVIZ was born. Fin.K.L is one of those groups which had the Korean name decided first, with the English name to follow, which is why the English meaning is a little confusing (Fin Killing Liberty). Still, they'd end up being one of the greats of the first generation of K-Pop and an act to help break ground for future girl groups and soloists to move further into various markets.  Welcome, Fin.K.L. Their name in Hangeul is the only reason I have any idea of how to pronounce their group name (핑클). This was also the group that saw the start of Lee Hyori, now an accomplished soloist in her own right, as well as Ock Joo-hyun, a celebrated musical theatre actress; Lee Jin of the drama and variety acting persuasion; and Sung Yuri of the drama and film acting persuasion.  Last of the girl group submissions for the moment, then I get to move on to some of the boy groups, but it's not just boy groups. There's a co-ed submission in there, which is such a yay from me. I'm excited for that. But! I'm also very excited for this, because she is a second gen heavy weight, reigning champion of an artist. Award-winning. Best-selling. Chart topping. And that's just her as a soloist, that's not even counting the years before that as the leader of Girls' Generation, which is one of the most well-known groups to come out of K-Pop. I admire her a lot, as you can tell, and I also think she's really cool. And funny. I don't know if she's generally known for her humor, but I think she's hilarious. She's also fairly out-spoken which is something else that I admire about her, but the group turns eighteen this year. Music Show Wins:: Week of 05/07 - 05/13

  One of those wins is not like the others. I saw the article the other day talking about its surprise climb up the charts since last October, but what's so impressive about this is the song is over a year old and Woodz is in the military (also, this was his second win ever, which makes me so genuinely happy for him). He gets out in July, which is now something else for me to look forward to while I wait for Minhyun to get out. We're down to about seven months for him, about ten for JR, and about thirteen for Jeonghan and Ren (I think). Little micro-goals to focus on instead of the inevitable creep of time resulting in more idols enlisting. The discharges is a much less stressful thing to focus on. I also apologize for the lack of reviews the last few days, so I'll move these necessary reviews up to the top of the list for me to do, and add Woodz in. Song Review:: The CrewOne: Hit the Floor {Debut}

Release date: 2024 November 1 Album tracklist: Hit The Floor Album runtime: 3 minutes  Considering Ace of Ace  has been over for weeks, I had no intention to do any reviews on the final tracks. But by the time this gets published, The CrewOne will have been on ASC, which means that I have to follow my rules. For the uninitiated, The CrewOne was a team put together for Ace of Ace  consisting of the fourth gen boy groups ATBO and JUST B. Apparently disbandment was in their future before the two groups got put together, which is completely ridiculous as JUST B debuted in 2021 and ATBO debuted in 2022. I'm sorry, there are a number of groups that went on to be very successful after three not-successful years and if their companies had disbanded them, the face of K-Pop would be radically different.
