Song Review:: GIRLSET: Commas {Debut}

  • Release date: 2025 August 29

  • Album tracklist: Commas

  • Album runtime: 2 minutes

 Welp. Honestly, I'm a little surprised that JYPE didn't toss the whole group out with the bathwater, but I suppose either the remaining members are more willing to stick out what are industry wide conditions, mostly, or JYPE sees potential for the remaining members to still do something with what's left of their careers. So, here we are with a re-debut. You'll notice I don't always hit the Katseye releases (and I've been entirely ignoring the British group from SM whose name I do not remember, but I'm also still very angry with SM over the Seunghan situation, and that reminds me, I need to do his solo debut) because they're not K-Pop and my backlog is currently so massive that I'm not going to cover them too much, especially when I'm peeved over things about that group (mostly HYBE related, as you can guess) and I don't particularly like their sound to begin with. That being said, GIRLSET is technically a debut, so I'd like to cover at least this one, even if I don't cover any of the others they release unless I really like them. Which is possible. I want to like them, even if that means exhaustion. I do have to check the ages, though, but that also means I got to learn that the two members who left have said to continue to support these four. So there are apparently no hard feelings, conditions seem to have improved, and the maknae is now 19. So, there we have it, folks. This was kind of a long paragraph to start off with, but I think it's important. If you want me to look at any of the global groups (or, really, any artist in general because that I'm not actually that restricting), go ahead and drop the suggestion in The Form.

If this song was three seconds shorter, it would be less than two minutes long. Let that sink in.

I'm finding myself a little conflicted. On the one hand, I think there's potential for the instrumental to do something interesting. The ding at the end is a good signal for the song being over and adds an interesting note to the song. It's just, you know, missing a whole minute of song development and saturation.

On the other hand, they've got really good voices. The sing-song chorus I could do without, but everything else has basically the three things I really look for in songs. So vocally, kind of my jam. But, like with this review, it's too short.

No actual music video either. You know, it's good to see JYP throwing money at this group to try to redeem public opinion by giving them a big, triumphant re-debut with a lot of songs, and a cool music video. Oh, wait.
