Song Review:: Kim Sungkyu (INFINITE): OFF THE MAP- When I think about you

  • Release date: 2026 March 02
  • Album tracklist: When I think about you, Over It, Dreaming, Portrait, Answer, When I think about you (Inst.)
  • Album runtime: 15 minutes

Am I finally getting around to the actual title track after having the pre-release finished for weeks? Yes. Yes, I am. But, better late than never. Also, this is four-and-a-half minutes of song and I love him for that.

We have an acoustic guitar heavy in the front row of this instrumental, which we do get separately and I'm very happy about that as well. But I was in the middle of basking in the watery chimes when the violin kicked in, and my attention swiveled to wake up from the lull that the rest of this gorgeous instrumental put me into. This instrumental is magnificent and soothing and has a very clear build up to the climax of the song.

His voice is incredible. Hey, if anyone wants to submit one of his songs for a GH or BBS post, I am not going to be mad because do you hear this? Thank you, second gen K-Pop idol, for not restricting your vibrato. It's literally just there, no matter how short the note is. His slides feel as deliberate as his precision with hitting the notes, but that does also mean that there is a sharpness here that you often find from the big vocalists in early third and prior K-Pop. It's the trade-off. He doesn't have a moment where he really lets that voice go, which is a shame because this feels like either a twelve divorces at the same time or so much in love that he can't function kind of song. There should be hyphens in there, but I cannot be bothered today. It depends of course on whether this is a happy love song or a post-break-up song. In other words, we don't have any big belts or vocal runs, and I'm a little sad about it. But I'm legitimately in awe of how much vibrato we hear the entire time. I'm glad I came back to it.

Well, the cool lighting tells me that this is in fact a post-break-up song, although I like the spot of warm lighting, like it's tiny flicker of hope. And then of course we have fire, but not in a safe, controlled way, so naturally, I have to say that the vibes are immaculate and this is a sad song.
