Song Review:: Kim Sungkyu (INFINITE): OFF THE MAP- Over It

  • Release date: 2026 March 02
  • Album tracklist: When I think about you, Over It, Dreaming, Portrait, Answer, When I think about you (Inst.)
  • Album runtime: 15 minutes

I was looking ahead at the March comebacks and releases so I can get them added to my planner, and I recognized one of the names as someone who dropped a song in February, which means that this was a pre-release, which means I'd like to cover it before doing the title track. I really like the word "which" apparently. It turns out that he is the leader of INFINITE and my expectations raised a lot. First, he's a second gen idol. If you've been around this long, then you'd better have the skills to warrant that longevity, and he debuted as a soloist in 2012. Second, it's INFINITE. They're one of the reasons why K-Pop today has the standards for synchronization that they do, and that's on top of their vocal skills. Third, I expect a lot from leaders because the good ones rise to the occasion. If I get to know the group at all, the odds are astronomically high that he will be my favorite. I'm so happy about the album length though. This one? Three-and-a-half minutes. The title track? Four-and-and-a-half minutes. Thank you. Thank you, so much.

This has some rather dark and gritty bits to the instrumental, which surprised me. Those moments are not frequent, nor do they last long, but we do get some bite here to supplement his voice. This doesn't quite scratch the country itch I'm always secretly looking to appease, but it's adjacent to it, like whoever the composer was heard one song from the 50s and used that as inspiration for the guitar use specifically. It does make sense, if the quick bio I read was correct, for the sound of this instrumental to be what it is, given his interest in rock music.

I am satisfied with his voice. I did briefly think that I had to different tabs open and playing, but the answer to that is no. His vibrato is quite lovely and does an excellent job of holding the song in place This is just a really good solo song, but at the same time, it's got so many things going for it that it's even stronger. I'm pleased. And I think my cat is as well because he's sitting behind my head and purring.

They went with more of a rock band music video for this song, which so well matches that I wholeheartedly agree with the choice.
