Song Review:: Billlie: the collective soul and unconscious: chapter two- ZAP

  • Release date: 2026 May 06
  • Album tracklist: $ECRET no more, ZAP, WORK, TBD, B'yond me, SOUPASTA, OFF-AIR, ZAP - ultraviolet remix, WORK - anonymous remix, SOUPASTA - unconscious remix, DOMINO ~ butterfly effect, cloud palace - collective soul remix
  • Album runtime: 34 minutes

The title track is too short for me to want anything to do with it, not when the first track is obviously a callback to a song I really like of theirs and is also three-and-a-half minutes long. It's also not the shortest song on here, although that's only because the song shorter than it is a remix of this song. Big sigh from me. Big sigh. Still, it's good news that Billlie continues to make and release new music, which is what we're looking for. Bad news (and this is nothing against the members because they had nothing to do with it), this album is currently embroiled in a potential-use-of-AI legal battle. That's another big sigh from me.

That's interesting. While most of the aural landscape of the instrumental is taken by the skittering beat, there's enough of a synthy grind to it that it keeps the song weighted. I'm also very interested by that beginning because that's the most science fiction horror thing (like, Alien, for instance) I've heard in a while, even if the rest of the song doesn't maintain that heavy threat. It also reminds me a lot of the beginning of Fantastic Baby, but I've been listening to that song a lot the last little bit so that could just be because it's recently in my brain. Also there are police sirens as sound effects, so if you drive with this on, please be aware of that.

I was going to say that this would be a good middle-of-the-concert song, but I'm revising the opinion you didn't know I had to say that I'd actually put this at the beginning. Maybe not as the opening song, but definitely in that first block of songs. There are parts of this that are in a similar style to Like Jennie by Jennie, and the parts that remind me of that song are the parts I didn't really like about Like Jennie. So at least I'm consistent because I don't particularly like them in this song either. The end of the song has so much happening that it's weirdly soothing, but that could just be for me.

I love their ruddy outfits. I'm amused by the amount of stylish falling the music video has. Considering the aforementioned "potential-use-of-AI legal battle", I'm also pleased by the list of credits at the end. There's a hint of a storyline, which is probably stronger for someone who is more keeping up with any lore that the group may have, but largely this feels like a vibes and visuals music video.
