Song Review:: i-dle: We made- Crow {Pre-Release}

 It took me so long to do this song that the whole album came out. It's fine. It's fine. And you know what? Funnily enough there are so many kpop songs called "Love Is Pain" that I could almost do an entire month of them for the Expanded Offerings.

Interesting way to start this song. I would love how the electric guitar is used to provide an interesting grindy and grungy texture to the song, but it's also very repetitious through much of the song. I say that, but I also acknowledge that the song instrumentally has a very hard change of texture halfway through that cleverly uses rests to provide an aural reset so that switch isn't nearly as jarring as it could be. And then we get an organ? And audience participation clapping? And a synth being used like a violin? There are some bold choices being made here.

Every time this song starts over, because I put songs on repeat while I'm working on these posts, this song has a very clear starting point. Also, I don't know if this is a product of where I spent my first ten years or so of life, but crows in my head are very strongly associated with Native Americans. Like, I didn't realize that I had an assumption of what this song was going to sound like because of that association, and then I was startled because the beginning with the vocalizations matched what my expectations were going to be. Which was bizarre enough that I had to take a couple of minutes to process that rapid-fire series of emotions. And then the song continued to surprise me because we've got some slinky, 1940s lounge club act vocals going on as well to stand apart from the biker vibe I'm getting from the majority of the song. I genuinely think I like this song, but it's going to take me 3-5 business days to actually process how much song is stuffed into this song.

You know how I regularly comment on the lack of color in the music videos these days? You know how this song only had black and white going on here? Normally, I'd be grumpy about this, but because crows are black and the members are supposed to be standing out strongly, they went for the stark, edgy contrast. They look amazing.

Greatest Hits:: TWICE: One Spark

 This was actually the first TWICE song I liked, and I wouldn't have heard it if it hadn't been for a cupsleeve event where I live. And I figured I probably should listen to some of the songs before I went. I listened to three or four that didn't really spark my interest, pun absolutely intended, and then this one played. And I went "Oh? Okay. I've got my song." I've had a bee in my bonnet about this song for a couple of months now, ever since I saw a video compilation on YouTube about the person's worst songs from 2024. No, I will not be sharing it. Think of this as in the classic tradition of scholars responding to each other by writing their own disagreement papers, like during the Enlightenment.     I had this one started over a year ago and then realized the bad timing, and decided to delay it a little bit because it would have been posted during Ramadan and would have been one of the most insensitive things I could have done due to the chanted bits of the Quran which have been removed (there was one concert in 2016 where the unedited version was the one used and CL apologized, corrected the mistake by ordering that all copies of the unedited version destroyed, and that's that) . Which is why it got sent to the pile for me to forget about. I remembered about it during Ramadan again this year, which frustrated me and made me laugh because I needed to remember it during literally any other month of the year. Song Review:: Taemin (SHINee): Eternal- Sexy in the Air

Battle of the B-Sides:: f(x): Shadow

 I love when I get suggestions for groups that I've heard of but haven't actively listened to. I know that f(x) has several songs that are on the list of K-Pop influential songs that pretty much everyone should be familiar with, if they don't know  them. I don't think this is one of them, because this is a b-side, but I could also be wrong. Which is why I like being able to dig into the albums and the songs a little bit. So, this comes from their second studio album Pink Tape, released in 2013, which won a bonsaeng in 2014 at the GDAs, and hit number 1 on multiple music charts worldwide. One of the songs on the album was originally supposed to be Ariana Grande's song, and f(x) got it instead. So that's pretty cool. Song Review:: BSS (Seventeen): Teleparty- CBZ (Prime Time)

So while I'm very, very excited for this particular song because I love BSS and their particular brand of cheerful chaos, that awareness sits on my shoulder and glares at me. But, as long as it isn't in the vicinity of sad, I'll likely be fine listening to it. The Hoshi x Woozi subunit coming up shortly may be a different story, but that's a problem for Future Fangirl to worry about. Song Review:: I.O.I: I.O.I : LOOP- Suddenly

I also hear this may have gotten an All Kill? Congrats for that as well. And the quality of this survival show group had so many of them end up in other groups, including the two who did not participate in the reunion and comeback. I like how pleasant this is. It's remarkably Stranger Things in terms of the instrumental, but only because it's got a bit of that 80s techno flavoring rather than it being a full dish of it, like a curry potato salad rather than a bowl of curry, if that makes sense.  I have changed which song I want to do for Jeonghan's discharge song three times now. I considered Pretty U, because I love the bit of the choreography where he does the cheek tapping move. And I would consider it for Joshua because of his iconic mistake, but since he's an LA native born and raised, he won't be getting discharged. And I have the cheek tapping move attached to Jeonghan. It's very cute. Then I thought about doing one of the Japanese releases because he learned Japanese to talk to the Japanese Carats because English and Chinese were already covered. My second favorite Seventeen song is a Japanese release, but I also feel like I want to hold onto Ima for a different occasion. Song Review:: ILLIT: I'LL LIKE YOU- Cherish (My Love)

The fact that they're not allowed to stay for the end of year award shows seems to be pretty good evidence that they really shouldn't be working in groups like this anyway; at least, not yet. But until enough people can say "stop exploiting the children," nothing is going to change. In the case of ILLIT, yes, their maknae turned sixteen this year, much like Dino of Seventeen when they debuted. But, also like Seventeen, the group as a whole gets to squeak by in my books on a technicality: she didn't turn sixteen after they debuted (which means she turns seventeen in their first year, which is tolerable though not ideal), and at least half of the group was already fully eighteen or older at debut.
