Song Review:: MYTRO: LOVESTRUCK SISTERS Episode 5- Bomb Bomb Bomb {Pre-Debut}
- Release date: 2024 November 02
- Album tracklist: Bomb Bomb Bomb, Bomb Bomb Bomb - Instrumental
- Album runtime: 7 minutes
Yes, this was released at the beginning of November, but the music video was just released, so I'm counting this one as a pre-debut single. They're the newest SM boy group, all of them at least 25 or older, and they're a trot group. Even though I'm generally deeply displeased with SM in general for a lot of reasons right now, I also deeply love trot, which was not something that I was expecting when I started listening to K-Pop. I don't know why I didn't when I traditionally love the more traditional music, but I am an established dingus. This is a pre-debut single from their reality show they've got going on that I know literally nothing about, but according to the album, this actually came from episode 5/8, so we might be seeing more music videos coming out of them before February and their actual debut. If we do, then I'll get those reviews going at the appropriate time.
And this comes with an instrumental, so I'm going to put that one on so I don't get distracted by their voices as I'm almost positive I'm going to.
The Latin feel from the guitar at the beginning reminds me of Last Night by Jeonghan and Wonwoo, but it's even more heavily leaning into the flamenco with a brazen trumpet. That feeling continues through the song with the clever little moments of energy bursts and subtle choir vocalizations in the background. Oh, my stars, does it actually have a key change? Be still, my soul. I have not been hearing enough songs with key changes in them, and it is a sorely underused musical technique. This honestly was not where I thought this song was going to go, but I'm glad to be wrong.
Yup. If I had tried to listen to this with the vocals first, I'd have been so distracted that I'm not sure I would have been able to parse the instrumentals from the vocals. These are some very smooth, gorgeous voices, and there's even the trot version of rap happening in a few different spots. There's aren't as many harmonizations happening as I was expecting, but those vocals runs are so far past just crisp and beautiful that it's not even funny. I've known of the group's existence for a while; I was trying to avoid them because I knew what was going to happen as soon as I started listening to them. Also, and this is kind of funny, because of the genre, I keep expecting this song to be in Spanish, even though I understand a bit of the Korean, which I would not be able to do if it actually was in Spanish. But my brain is trying to tell me this is actually in Spanish.
Sophisticated is the name of the game here, and the members wear it well. I wasn't expecting choreography from them, although this is SM so I should have known, but it's familiar in a BTOB choreography kind of way. Not the focus, not meant to be the focus because their voices are, and simply an extra to make the performance a little more dynamic. It's incredible the difference age and maturity makes. Some of the idol groups, it can take half a decade or more for them to reach the same believability in their gravitas, but these guys haven't even debuted yet and they've already got it. Unsurprising, but fascinating.
