Song Review:: Yugyeom (GOT7): Sweet Like
- Release date: 2024 December 17
- Album tracklist: Sweet Like
- Album runtime: 2 minutes
Ooh, I like that the members of the group are putting out music ahead of their group comeback. It's a good way to drum up interest and put the group back into the conversation without too much difficulty. Well, no more difficulty than actually preparing music, which is quite difficult. That makes both him and the leader who have released music recently, although to be fair, I may have missed one of the members. I don't know all their names yet. Also, that is a very uncomfy runtime. It's less than two and a half minutes.
That is a lot of synth is to be had. It especially reminds me of early to mid 80s EDM at the very beginning before the drums and the beat start kicking in, as though I could find it in Stranger Things. The rest of the song, that connection isn't nearly as strong, but for a few measures at the opening, I could believe it. I find it a little interesting that this is the second song I've reviewed in less than a week with a log drum. I don't know why I'm suddenly tuned to that sound, but once you hear it, you can't unhear it, it seems.
I think this is the first song I've heard of his as a soloist, and I don't think the autotune does him any favors here. It's making his voice go careening around on the notes like they're a slip-n-slide with oil instead of water. He's also sounding a little nasally, which again, I think is at least partially because of the autotune he's got over his voice because in the spot where it's less overpowering, he's hitting the notes like a trained singer should be and while it still sounds like it's originating in the upper nose region, that quality is much diminished. But, unfortunately, this song isn't even an example of his voice. Because of the length, it's a sample.
There is a certain kind of indie performer who take certain substances and then decide to film their own music videos on super8 film because they think it would be a good idea. This music video reminds me a lot of those, except for the choreography parts. That's what snaps me back to K-Pop, as the other music videos don't typically have those. And the choreography is excellent. Yugyeom's movements are so sharp and clean, it almost makes up for the travesty of what autotune has done to his voice.
