Song Review:: Hwan Woong (Oneus): Radar {Debut}

  • Release date: 2025 May 29
  • Album tracklist: Radar
  • Album runtime: 3 minutes

 Congrats on your solo debut! This guy is incredible. Also, fun fact, I was rewatching Produce 101 S2 a couple of months ago because I wanted to see who else I recognized other than my NU'EST boys and I wanted to actually pay attention to the future members of Wanna One and who did I see? This dude. I may have squeaked in surprise, and after his performance on Road to Kingdom: Ace of Ace, I think he's got a lot of potential as a soloist.

I get one of my favorite sound effects! The echoey underwater breathing! It's definitely because of my love of FFX, but I do love it when that sound shows up in songs. Radar actually has a lot of interesting things going on in the instrumentals because we also get something like a telephone ringing to join the driving bass and the occasional science fiction warbles. It's also got a substantial section where the bass, which is basically the entirety of the instrumentals, the backbone if you will, to be largely replaced by audience participation snapping! I haven't gotten to talk about audience participation snapping in a while, and I'm delighted that Hwan Woong is the one who lets me do so again. Also, as expected from an Ace, this song sounds so much like a dance track that I can't wait to see what he's doing for the choreography.

I realized as I was finishing that paragraph that there are sections of the song that remind me so much of Bet Bet by NU'EST. Like, that's my ult group, so a huge compliment there. And as an even bigger compliment, Hwan Woong reminds me of a combination of Taemin and Baekho. We don't exactly have any big belts to properly show off his voice here, but he does show off his falsetto quite well, so there is that. It's a solid debut track that likely will show off both of the strongest aspects of Hwan Woong's skills once I get a look at the music video or a stage.

What did I say? Choreography Ace right here. It does make this more of a performance video than a music video, which is fine. He moves so incredibly well. And also, shout out to the stylists because Hwan Woong in the suit vest with the button down shirt? Very, very nice.
