- Album runtime: 11 minutes
First subunit from my girls, Dreamcatcher, one of the active girl groups that I listen to! For the record, I am always on the lookout for other groups like them! I keep finding girl groups I really like, get all excited and then the excitement deflates because I read the "d" word. Sadness. But! I'm very excited for this first subunit from them!
There is a hollow echoey quality to the instrumentals that in a different song would be delicate and fairylike. This is not that song. It's also got a pretty strong afrobeat with a decent amount of variation to keep my currently uncaffeinated brain focused on the instrumentals when this isn't exactly my favorite style of song, but that's okay. It's a little bit too disjointed for my taste but there is a lot of texture, which is something that I do appreciate. This is the kind of song where it could be quite a bit longer, and I'd be pretty cool with that.
Well-supported voices as I'd expect from a subunit of Dreamcatcher. Gorgeous. The amount of repetition, which sounds like a contradiction given the previous paragraph, is a little bit frustrating, but that's that's what you get when you have a song of this length. There's literally only so much space you can have to have the elements that make up a song and unfortunately some of the bits that really can make a song vocally interesting are the first one to go because they're seen as optional. It is what it is at this point, as frustrating as it is. The chorus is easily the weakest and that's where the structural problems lie. The verses, on the other hand, are the strongest parts of the song as that's where the voices are the strongest and the clearest. Unfortunately, because of the two-and-a-half minute runtime, there isn't a whole lot of time for a lot, and the song isn't dense enough to warrant such a short runtime. It does what it can, and they do what they can with it, but it's just too short.
I recognize that this is a subunit and not necessarily the same entity as the group as a whole, but one of my favorite things about Dreamcatcher is that they traditionally have very powerful choreography, which, as you may be aware if you've been following this little review blog of mine for some amount of time, is one of those things that can elevate a song and it's one of the things I like about K-Pop. It's not just a song, or a dance, it's a whole creative unit with so many pieces working together to create a show. I'm always hoping to see strong choreography. UAU is giving it to me. I'm a little in love. Likewise, the styling is incredibly on point, and they all just look so good. But the part that I have to give a specific and pointed shout out is for the transition from live action to animated, which is echoed in the lyrics. That's so well done.
