Big Matthew! I've got a lot of affection for him and his group because of Dive Studios (as well as the fact that they're one of the few co-ed groups currently active right now), and even though I have a strong suspicion this is not going to be a preferred genre for me, I'm still excited for this. However. There isn't a single song at three minutes and most of them are closer to two-and-a-half minutes.
I imagine that if I listen to this on repeat for too long, then the police and/or referee whistle will become a little grating. Well, we might have an answer to that depending on how long it take for me to write this. Although, I will say this for that whistle: it's not entirely regular. When it's happening, it tends to be on repeat, but it's not on the beat. It sounds like it's an eighth note off, between beats 1&2 and beats 3&4. There's a little bit of a jungle flavor to the instrumental as well that is fairly at odds with that whistle, but the whole thing is surprisingly subdued for a song called "Freak".
So it's actually really nice to have two very distinct voices in a feature song. Partially because I only have a vague knowledge of what BM sounds like, mostly because I'm pretty familiar with his speaking voice and the smooth, melodic rapping he's got going on sounds similar enough that I can clock his voice as his, which allows me to identify B.I's voice, who I'm much, much less familiar with. And beyond that, just the contrast is really nice. However. I'm not a fan of the chorus. It's composed entirely of two lines, one of which is just the word "freak" repeated a couple of times. I'm actually half-tempted to count how many times the word "freak" is used during the chorus, and in a song this short, having this kind of structure weakens both the chorus and the song as a whole by giving it a fluffy, insubstantial backbone, but I'm not nearly irritated by it enough to do it in a fit of pique, and I'm also not curious enough to do it out of enjoyment.
BM, I could have sworn you said you wanted to do songs that didn't just make the fans horny. I believe Peniel described it as you wanting to make the fans "emotionally horny". I'm not sure that this is what he meant. So this is a Vibes and Visuals music video. This is also very suggestive, but on the other hand, it doesn't matter what you like, there's something for everyone here to enjoy the eye candy. Also, apparently B.I got shy reading thirst tweets. So. That's where we're at right now.
