So this was a surprise. I love his habit of just throwing songs at us with little to no warning, as stressful as it also is, because those surprises mean we're getting a gift of great vocals, strong storytelling, and clear emotions. Though, to be honest, that's a strength of the entire group, even when it's only one or part of them releasing the music. And bless Changsub for giving us an album where the average runtime is just under four minutes. That feels extravagant in this day and age.
The song starts off so gently. The entire thing is gentle, but the beginning folds you into the song like a warm hug. We've got strings to lend a certain epicness, but at the same time, they're never so overpowering that you want to go marching off to war. Instead, it's the sweeping landscapes, the warmth of friends and family around a fireplace. In another song, the electric guitar solo would be time for a dance break, but I think instead we're going to get a focus on the guitar as though he were the lead singer of a band. The balance is actually pretty great to support and supplement the vocals. And overall, it's just not a one-note instrumental, and I love that.
Correct me if I'm wrong (seriously please do), but it seems that 주르르 is an onomatopoeia, something that the Korean languages seems to love so much, which is great for the vibes but makes direct translation a little difficult. From what I can gather, it's a reference for a liquid of some (usually tears or blood) rolling or dripping down something, which makes the English title a bit more of a literal translation than we normally get. That's kind of cool. I bring this up because that word comes up a lot in the song, and is rhymed with quite often, but more than that, I just love the rhythm of it. Changsub's voice has an absolutely lovely rasp to it in spots, and that combined with the prevalence of his vibrato really gets the emotions of the song going. There's so much gorgeous movement in the melody that the half-belts he has are satisfying enough for me, but you know, generally speaking, I'm just kind of in love. And T'Challa, my cat who I think would leave me for Changsub if they ever met, keeps coming over and trying to lay on my phone as this is playing.
This music video is in the form of a melancholy slice of life, which is very fitting for the song, and I still maintain that this is a hug of a song. But for those of you looking for something on the sadder, but accepting and understanding side, here you go.
