Song Review:: Xiumin (EXO): Overdrop- Overdrop
- Release date: 2025 October 20
- Album tracklist: Overdrop, Fireflies
- Album runtime: 6 minutes
We likely won't have too many solo works more until we get the full group comeback (hopefully). I'm so looking forward to that. In the meantime, we have subunits and soloists, which is another benefit of having a fairly large group, including Xiumin here! Although, a single is less time consuming than even a minu album, so he should be able to still have time for group prep. I'm talking a lot about the group, but in the unlikely event that anyone at SME sees this, it's a teeny, tiny reminder that he and the other members of CBX are still part of EXO. The title track is less than three minutes long, which is a bit irksome, if you can imagine. If you're new here, welcome! I like songs that are at least three minutes long, or at least within a few seconds of that mark.
One of the interesting parts of this instrumental is that there are a couple of points where the song is majority vocals and only with the faintest hint of instruments, mostly in the form of either a bass guitar, or a very deep drum. I'm not sure which, not that it really matters in the long run given that the first time I listened to this song, I thought he was a cappella multipole times until I double checked, but it does allow the song to have a much wider range of textures, especially in light of the electric guitar solo that in practice, will likely be a dance break of some sort. Really, the song has quite a lot of range, and I enjoy that.
So, good news, I'm not completely frustrated by the song. Xiumin is showing off both a very controlled falsetto and also a solid lower register, though I wouldn't necessarily call his a low voice at any point. He spends a lot of time around the falsetto area of his range, if not outright in it, which results in quite a high song. We've got some gorgeous runs out of him and something is nearly a belt, which is a little bit disappointing to me, but it is what it is.
So, really this is more of a performance video than it is a music video, which is fine. As expected, we've got a lot of strong choreography from him. The dance break is exactly as cool as I expected it to be. There's something a little weird about the styling of the music video, a smoothness that I'd love to see how it was achieved and why that look was chosen.
