Frankly, I’m a little surprised by the fact that the mini album is called TASTY and the title track is not “Appetite”, which is the name of one of the other songs on the album. It would have been pretty thematically appropriate. I’ve actually been seeing the challenges a lot, not that I’ve actually been watching them because I didn’t want the challenge to influence my thoughts, but I really hope that, if I’m seeing their challenges, they’ll go viral for this song even if I haven’t heard it yet. The group needs it. Also, the average is longer than three minutes, and the title track itself is three minutes long. Barely, but it counts.
This is one of those sleek and shiny instrumentals that would do well in a nightclub in some dystopian science fiction. It isn’t particularly big or bold, but it’s not soft. There’s a pretty firm backbone to the song, enabled through the consistency and the heaviness of the beat. It’s not a vibrate-in-your-bones kind of beat, to be clear. But it is one that is heavy enough that the song is very grounded despite that.
Towards the end of the song, there is some fascinating vocal layering happening. It’s a mix of ad-libs and harmonization, but it’s fascinating. The volume is pretty consistent throughout the whole thing, though we get a lot of range in pitch. Also, even though it’s lacking a pair of big, distinct voices, this song sounds like something SHINee would do. There’s one member of DKZ who specifically sounds a lot like Key and another who reminds me quite a bit of Taemin, which is massively complimentary. I don’t necessarily love this, but I’ve got a couple of playlists I want to add this to because it’s a song that if I’m in a couple of the right moods, I’ll want to listen to.
Here's what I'm going to say about this. Most of the K-Pop music videos I've seen don't use the extreme close-up as much as they could, which is a shame. This one does, so I'm actually pleased with this. There are also a couple of points where the choreography specifically made me raise my eyebrows with how impressed I was with it. But, generally speaking, it's a very cool-toned music video, and that's something I deeply appreciate.
