So for the first release of November, we’re going to go with the leader-maknae of WINNER to start off with. I feel bad for him in general because that is an unenviable position to be in. I’m also curious to see (eventually) what a post-military, full group WINNER is like, but that will be something I wait for. In the meantime, I’m actually excited to see what Seungyoon is like as an artist. WINNER is one of those groups that I’m interested in, but I just haven’t done a whole lot with. YG groups as a whole seem to be like that for me. But this will give me a good sense of him so that it’s easier to get to know the whole group. This is his second full album. The first one was back in 2021 and was on average about three-and-a-half minutes long. This one still has an average over three minutes, though a little bit shorter than the last album. But that’s okay because the title track is almost four minutes long. Already, I’m loving him. This is a gift. Now I just need to like the music and this will be golden. I am a little delighted that he has a song with Seulgi on the album. Just for the record.
(BUSY BUDDY has strings. I’m in love.)
(And he’s also got a song with a former member of Sechskies, one of my favorite first gen groups, so I may actually have to buy this album.)
It’s a gorgeous song. It feels a little 00s/10s. Actually, and when I realized this I laughed a little, it reminds me a little bit of Teenage Dream by Katy Perry. There’s nothing specifically concrete that makes me go “This is just like Teenage Dream!” It’s more in the rhythm of the flow of the song, especially around the chorus. That’s what’s similar. It’s a surprisingly understated song in terms of the instrumental. The chorus is the most bombastic part of the song easily, but it’s not the biggest part of the song right there (spoiler, it is with the vocals). I’m almost not even noticing the instrumentals for the most part because they almost disappear. It’s nice. I like it. It’s just a little baffling.
Okay. So. I’m assuming this man is a vocalist judging by this song. He’s actually got quite a lovely voice so having this song on repeat for the entirety of writing this review is the exact opposite of a hardship. He dips up into his falsetto with fair regularity, but most of the song is a lot lower, so there’s a good contrast in capability there. But that chorus, especially the end one, is so vocally rich and layered. There might even be a little bit of a key change, which, if there is, makes me happy as a clam hooked up to valve sensors. I don't actually know if they're happy, but I assume they're living their best lives just doing their clam thing and being better than machines. Sorry. A bit of a ramble there. Anyway. The song is absolutely gorgeous.
That's a cute music video. It feels very much like a slice of life with some fun jamming sessions to boot. But it's also just such a soft music video with joy radiating out of it. It's nice. I like that.
